Often, needlewomen are faced with the problem of choosing yarn for knitting the desired texture and color, despite the fact that a huge number of a wide variety of threads are sold in stores. The way out is to dye them with your own hands, and you can dye even old yarn in the desired color.
It is necessary
- - yarn;
- - dye;
- - table vinegar;
- - water;
- - soap;
- - an enamel bowl or large saucepan.
Instructions
Step 1
Before you start dyeing the yarn, determine what fibers it consists of. For this, you can carry out the simplest experiment. bring a lighted match to the end of the thread. If the fire moves slowly along it, while the smell of burnt bone appears, and a sintered ball forms at the tip, then the thread is made of pure wool. If the thread burns out quickly and the smell of burnt paper appears, then it is cotton yarn. If the threads are synthetic, then they will not burn, but melt.
Step 2
Once you've determined the composition of your yarn, find the right dye from your local hardware store. For blended yarns, universal is suitable. Please note that the color indicated on the package will turn out only if you dye the threads white. If you dye colored yarn, then the color will turn out to be darker and more saturated. At the same time, combining different shades of dye and yarn, you can achieve a completely different color. For example, if you dye red yarn with blue dye, you get a purple hue, and if green, then brown.
Step 3
Experiment with a small amount of thread. Dilute the dye according to the instructions on the package and dye the short thread. if after it dries, the color turns out to be lighter than what is needed, add more dye to the solution, and if darker, dilute it with water. Only after you have achieved the desired shade, proceed to dyeing the entire yarn.
Step 4
Wind the threads into skeins weighing no more than 100 g and tie them in two places with strong thread. Make a soapy solution and wash the skeins in it without twisting or crushing them. Then rinse the yarn thoroughly in warm water and wring it out.
Step 5
Make a dye solution in the required proportion and add 1.5 cups of table vinegar to each bag. Stir the mixture until the dye is completely dissolved and immerse the skeins in it. Put the dishes on low heat and bring to a boil. In this state, the yarn should lie in the solution for about one hour. All this time, carefully turn the skeins periodically.
Step 6
Remove the dishes from the heat and let the solution cool. Take out the yarn and rinse it in warm water with the addition of 1 tablespoon of vinegar to 1 liter of water.
Step 7
Wring the skeins lightly and wrap them in a clean cloth to absorb excess moisture. Hang up the threads and dry, then roll them into balls.
