Embodying their own design ideas, needlewomen sometimes face the problem of choosing the yarn of the required shade. Or the available high-quality yarn has such a faded color that it is impossible to knit a fashionable thing from it. In both cases, you can solve the problem by dyeing the yarn yourself.

It is necessary

  • - yarn (wool or fluff);
  • - dyes;
  • - pelvis;
  • - vinegar;
  • - soda

Instructions

Step 1

Decide what you will paint. Aniline dyes are available at hardware stores. Keep in mind that only threads made of wool or down are dyed well, but the result of dyeing silk, cotton and floss is impossible to predict. In this case, you should first try on a small amount of yarn. In addition to specialized dyes, you can use food, for example, for coloring Easter eggs, instant juices - Yupi, Zuko, etc., as well as natural dyes - onion husks, oak bark, birch leaves, hibiscus tea and much more.

Step 2

Roll the yarn into loose skeins, about 30 cm long. This is necessary so that the yarn is completely dyed. Before painting, soak the cooked skeins in hot water with the addition of soda (1 tablespoon per 10 liters), hold for 15-20 minutes, squeeze, rinse in clean water and squeeze again.

Step 3

Dissolve the selected dye in a little hot water, if necessary, strain. Pour the saturated solution into a bowl of warm water, add 1 tablespoon each of baking soda and vinegar (90%). There should be enough water for the yarn to float freely in it, otherwise it will be colored unevenly. The saturation of the paint should be determined "by eye": if you need a dark color, then take more paints, if light - less. By mixing dyes, you can get unusual colors.

Step 4

Dip the wrung out yarn into a basin and put on low heat. Stir gently so as not to tangle the yarn. Boil the skein for half an hour, then take it out, add 2 more tablespoons of vinegar to the water and dip the skein into the water again. Cook for another 1 hour. During this time, the water should lighten noticeably, if this does not happen, add another 1 tablespoon of vinegar. Remove the bowl from the heat and let the water cool. Remove the yarn, rinse in warm water and dry naturally.

Step 5

To get a multi-colored skein, use a different dyeing method. Dissolve 2-3 colorants in a little water in separate glasses. Place a large bag in a container such as a tray. paint may leak and be difficult to remove. Spread the soaked and wrung out yarn on the bag. Visually divide the skein into sectors and pour dyes so that all the yarn is dyed. If you initially take 3 colors, then you should also have several shades at the mixing boundaries. Therefore, it is better to take the colors that match. Cover the skein with another bag, fold everything neatly and place the bundle in the third bag. Tie it tightly. Dip the bag in water and boil for 1-1.5 hours. Then let the water cool down, take out the skein, rinse it in water with vinegar, and then in clean one. Dry the yarn naturally.
