For a bed with a custom size or just for a new bed, it is better to sew the mattress yourself, while you can be sure that it will perfectly fit into the given frames. Of course, you will hardly be able to make an orthopedic or anti-decubitus mattress, but with the optimal combination of layers, sleeping on a homemade mattress will be soft and comfortable.
It is necessary
- - foam rubber;
- - roulette;
- - knife;
- - scissors;
- - pen or felt-tip pen;
- - batting;
- - upholstery material: linen, teak, coarse calico or other;
- - sewing machine.
Instructions
Step 1
Measure the width and length of your bed. In addition, if there are wooden bumpers, be sure to take them into account when planning the thickness of the mattress, since if they bulge out, it will not be so convenient to use the bed.
Step 2
Buy thick foam from the store. Please note that with a thickness of less than 10 cm it will be quite hard to sleep, the best option would be several layers stacked on top of each other.
Step 3
Using a pen or marker, draw a mattress pattern on the foam rubber. If it will consist of several parts and two layers, make a separate pattern for each layer so that the joint lines of the plates do not coincide.
Step 4
Cut the foam along the lines you have drawn. Thin layers can be cut simply with scissors, and call an assistant to cut a thick layer. One of you should push the halves apart, and the other with a sharp knife should be neatly along the drawn line. You can do without an assistant, while clamping one part of the blade to be cut with a heavy object or a vice.
Step 5
On top of the foam layer, put one or two layers of batting or other material to make the mattress more hygroscopic - without additional padding, it will be too hot to sleep in summer. Cut the batting exactly to the size of the mattress and cut along the marked line.
Step 6
Take the material for upholstery, it can be dense calico, teak, linen or other natural fabric. Make a pattern, mark the length and width of the mattress, add a distance equal to the thickness on the sides. Also, consider seam allowances. If you would like to be able to wash the cover from time to time, make it removable. To do this, provide an overlap, like a pillowcase, or sew a zipper.
Step 7
Sew all the cross seams first, overcast them. Sew on the zipper or overlap. Then grab the side seams, wrap the corners in them along the width of the foam rubber and sew, sweep or zigzag the seams. Roll up the cover like an accordion and carefully insert the mattress into it along with the batting, trying to keep everything flat.
