A piston in Minecraft is a block that affects nearby blocks. A conventional piston pushes other blocks in one direction, a sticky piston can not only push, but also return blocks to their place.
Basic mechanics in minecraft
Pistons are used by players to create traps, secret doors, and generally complex mechanisms. They can affect characters and various objects. At the same time, their effect does not apply to chests, stoves, tablets, spawners (blocks that generate monsters), obsidian and bedrock.
Plain and sticky pistons can be found in the temple located in the jungle.
Pistons can push other pistons if they are compressed. Many interesting schemes are built on this. When you try to move a torch, pumpkin, watermelon and some other objects, they are destroyed. Pistons block fluids, which is why they are often used to create sluices. These blocks do not burn from lava.
The pistons need to be activated with a red dust signal. Any switch can work as an activator.
This block first appeared in an amateur custom modification, after which it was transferred to the official game. The piston is always installed facing the character.
How to make pistons?
To create a normal piston, you will need three blocks of any planks, four cobblestones, an iron ingot, and a pile of red dust. All of these components are fairly easy to obtain. Iron is found in any cave below level 64, red dust is mined in huge quantities at great depths, boards and cobblestones can be mined on the surface. The scheme for crafting (creating) a piston is shown in the attached picture.
A sticky piston can be made from a regular one by adding a slime unit to it. This substance is released from slugs, which are quite rare. They can be found in swamps and at great depths (below level 40) in caves in some parts of the map. Such plots are randomly generated when the world is created. Be careful when meeting slugs, they move by jumping and are quite dangerous. After death, large slugs disintegrate into several medium ones, and medium ones - into small ones, it is from them that the mucus falls out.
On multiplayer servers, pistons are often used by aggressive players to destroy buildings.
Mucus is a very valuable resource. If you find a place where slugs are found, remember its coordinates, make a mark on the map, build an artificial landmark. Sticky pistons are the backbone of most complex mechanisms. They can both repel and attract objects. To create a sticky piston, you need to place slime on a workbench over a regular piston.
