The figures of horses can be seen in ancient frescoes, paintings by famous artists, and paintings. There are artists who have devoted a significant part of their lives to drawing horses. A novice draftsman can also learn how to portray these wonderful animals.
Start by looking at
Consider a few pictures of horses. It is better if these are drawings, not photographs or paintings. Pay attention to the shapes of the body, head, legs. Imagine the centerlines of the torso, neck, head, and legs. Determine the angles at which these lines are located relative to each other and the horizon line. Estimate the approximate ratio of the axial dimensions.
Sketch the main lines
Lay the sheet horizontally. You can draw animals with a solid simple pencil. Draw a horizontal line across the entire sheet at a short distance from the bottom edge of the sheet. This is an important reference point along which you will draw the rest of the lines. Draw the centerline of the torso parallel to the horizontal line. It can also go up or down at a slight angle. On this line, mark the length of your torso. Mark the place where the neck will be. Draw a neck line at an angle of approximately 135 ° to the centerline. It will be slightly smaller in length. Draw the axial line of the head to the neck line at an angle of 70-80 ° to the neck line. Determine the position of your legs. In a galloping horse, the hind legs run at an angle of about 60 ° to the body line, and the front legs at an obtuse angle from 135 ° to about 170 °. The length of the legs is approximately equal to the length of the body.
Draw the outlines
The horse's body is a long oval, the neck is an upward trapezoid. The head is also trapezoidal. Draw these geometric shapes in proportion. Smooth the corners. Please note that the upper and lower parts of the legs are also trapezoidal, and the middle fragments are cylindrical, which on the plane look just like stripes. Draw the outlines of the legs, outline the boundaries of the hooves. One hind leg and one front leg are fully visible. Draw the thigh and shoulder. The thigh has the shape of an arc, the convex part of which is directed forward. The shoulder is sharper and more of an angle than an arch.
Mane and tail
Draw a triangular ear. One of the most characteristic features of a horse is the mane. It consists of two parts - a small bang that grows between the ears and directed forward, and strands, which during the jump can have an absolutely incredible shape. You can draw them with arbitrary lines, but you must try to follow the direction of hair growth. As for the tail, it can hang or flutter. Draw it with long, curved lines. Draw in the eye, nostril and hair. You can trace the horse and its most characteristic parts with a softer pencil, and also paint the horse with colored pencils. In the same way, a horse is drawn with wax crayons, sanguine or charcoal.
