The younger the moose, the easier it is to drive it. The hardest thing to catch is an experienced male moose. Females get tired much faster, stop more often and rarely rush at the hunter. Catching moose in pits is sometimes used in the western Urals. A pit is always arranged in logs, on mountain passes, in a river valley, in all places along which an elk passes through the Urals in autumn, and in spring it comes back. The experience of hunters will help you understand the main secrets of catching this animal.

Step 1
Place the pits on the elk in several rows at a distance from each other. Plan the main location of the pits from north to south, in the direction of the ridge. In addition to the main rows, arrange side chains of holes from west to east. Determine the distance of the hole from the hole and the number of them depending on the terrain. Be aware that hunters dig several dozen of these holes.
Step 2
Connect the pits together with a high palisade of poles in three or four rows. After all, the elk must go through the hole in your hedge, to which the sides of the pit adjoin. Trust experienced hunters: without a fence, an animal will never fall into a hole. Sometimes the elk jumps over a hedge or goes around a whole chain of holes.
Make sure that the hedge is close to the hole, the moose steps carefully along the edge of the hole, which often allows him to leave if your fence is not adjacent to the hole.
Step 3
Dig a hole by measurement in length and depth a little more than a fathom, and a width of about two arshins. To prevent it from collapsing, put a frame made of thin logs. Lay out the walls with a standing tynom of smooth poles. Scatter the earth from the pit and cover it with brushwood, and take away or burn the chips.
Step 4
Cover the hole of the hole along with three or four poles, on which put the rods across, then put the moss, and from the very top - the earth. Be very careful. Cover the pit without through holes.
The beast that fell into it, as a rule, sits still, and breaks out when the hunter approaches.
Step 5
Inspect the pits more often than every two weeks. When you find a live moose, never approach it from the front, because it can grab you by the edge of your clothing with its strong upper and muscular lip, and then pull you into a hole and kill you with its feet. There were cases when the elk reached out to a hunter standing one and a half meters from the front edge of the pit.
Step 6
After stabbing the elk, the industrialist takes it out of the pit on a strong rope with the help of a gate. Then remove the skin from the elk, just try to skin it as far as possible from the pit. You can catch the largest number of elk on the western slope of the Urals by pits or by racing along the first winter trail. The Eastern Urals are famous for completely different methods of elk fishing.
