Frans Nuyen became famous as an actress, for example, for her role in the episode "Elaan of Troy", which is part of the third season of the original series "Star Trek" (1966-1969). She was one of the first women of Vietnamese descent to appear on American television. Also among her most famous works is the role of the Polynesian Liat in the 1958 film South of the Pacific.
Date of birth and childhood
Frans Nuyen was born on July 31, 1939 in the city of Marseille. She is of mixed ethnicity. Her mother, as well as her maternal grandfather, had Romani roots, and her father was Vietnamese. It is also worth adding that when the actress has already become an adult and popular, in one of her interviews she said that culturally she feels like a Frenchwoman.
During the Nazi occupation of France, Nuyenne was raised by a cousin. She stopped attending school at the age of 11, after which she worked as a seamstress for some time.
Career in film and TV from 1958 to the present day
In 1956, young France moved from France to America and soon became a member of Lee Strasberg's New York acting studio. Then she had her first cameo roles on TV (for example, she appeared in such series as "City Toast", "Barrel Smoke", "The Perry Como Show").
In 1958, France made her film debut. She starred in the film version of the hit theatrical musical "South Pacific" (in Russian translation it is called "South Pacific"). This film version is a rather gripping drama about love in time of war against the backdrop of exotic landscapes. Nuyen appeared here in the form of the naive beauty Liat, who falls head over heels in love with the American lieutenant Cable. She subsequently received a Golden Globe nomination for this role.
Also in 1958, she took part in the Broadway production of "The World of Susie Wong" (here she, in fact, played the main character). This performance has been shown to viewers 508 times in two years. Interestingly, the actor William Shatner was France's partner in this production, and subsequently they played together several times on television.
In 1960, Nuyen was to star in the Hollywood film adaptation of The World of Susie Wong. However, when almost half of the film was already filmed, she was suddenly replaced by another actress with an Asian appearance - Nancy Kwan.
In the early sixties, France appeared in films such as The Last Time I Saw Archie (1961) Satan Never Sleeps (1962), A Girl Named Tamiko (1962), The Diamond Crown of the Borax (1963)).
In 1964, she starred in the TV series "Agents of ANKL," in the episode "The Cherry Blossom Case." And four years later, in 1968, she was invited to play in an episode of the original Star Trek series called "Elaan of Troyus." Moreover, she played the central figure of this episode - the alien Elaan, whose tears can make any man fall in love with her.
In the seventies, France also had interesting roles. So, for example, in 1973 she starred in the film "Battle on the Planet of the Apes" (this is the last, fifth film of the original pentalogy, which was a great success in its time).
And in 1978, she, along with Peter Falk and Louis Jourdan, appeared in an episode of the legendary Columbo series called "Poison from the Taster."
In the eighties, France played, albeit in guest roles, episodic roles in several serial projects familiar to the domestic audience (in the nineties and two thousand they were played on Russian channels) - "Private detective Magnum", "Murder She Wrote", "Santa Barbara" …
It is worth noting that in 1986 she joined the cast of the medical series St. Elswehr as Dr. Paulette Kim and played there until the end of 1988. This series is actually very famous in America, it received as many as 13 Emmy awards and was included in the list of fifty greatest TV shows of all time according to the TV Guide.
Since the end of the eighties, France has been filming much less. Among her works of the nineties, first of all, the movie "The Club of Joy and Luck" (1993), which tells the story of eight Chinese women who emigrated to the States, should be singled out. This picture shows the challenges they face in a country that has become their new homeland. Also, in the course of the plot, the heroines recall their childhood, life in the PRC before emigration.
Also during this period, France starred in the films "The Principle of Obsession" (1994) and "Smile Like Yours" (1997). In addition, in 1999, she appeared in episode 11 of the fifth season of Beyond the Possible (episode called The Ripper).
After that, France appeared in only two more films - "The Battles of Soldier Kelly" (2003) and "American Standards" (2008).
Frans Nuyen as a psychologist
In 1986, the actress received her master's degree in clinical psychology, and since then this has become her main activity.
As a psychologist, France has worked with abused and abused children and women, female prisoners and drug addicts. And she has received a number of professional awards for her work.
Today, Frans Nuyenne continues to prove himself as a consultant psychologist.
Personal life
From 1963 to 1966, Nuyen was married to psychiatrist Thomas Gaspard Morell. From this marriage she has a child - daughter Fleur (at the moment she lives in Canada and is a make-up artist by profession).
In 1967, she met her second husband, actor Robert Culp. It happened on the set of the TV series "I am a Spy". In the same 1967, they got married, but three years later they filed for divorce. Moreover, in these three years she was also a stepmother for four children of Robert Culp from a previous marriage - three boys (Jason, Joseph, Joshua) and one girl (Rachel).
Of course, in her fate there were also novels with other men. For example, in the early sixties, she had a short relationship with the famous Marlon Brando, who had a certain soft spot for Asian beauties.
