Winter landscapes with snow sparkling under the sun or white trees taken in cloudy weather can decorate any photo album or portfolio. But in order for the snow in the photo to turn out to be really white, it is necessary to make adjustments to the camera settings.

Step 1
The usual exposure used in this kind of lighting is not suitable for photographing a winter landscape - the footage is noticeably darker. If you are shooting in automatic mode, then use the preset mode (SCN), it is indicated in the settings by the icon of a snowman or snowflake. On expensive cameras, you will need to use manual mode (M). Start exposure compensation at + 1ev and increase it step by step to find the appropriate one by trial.
Step 2
Choose a time immediately after a snowfall, when the snow is particularly clear. After a while, numerous tracks will appear on it, and some of the snow will fall from the branches to the ground. Depending on how the area you selected is lit, choose a shooting time. Take a walk in the morning, afternoon and evening, see when the landscape is especially beautiful. Winter landscapes shot against the sun look interesting.
Step 3
Please note that the snow will be white or slightly bluish in the photo only in sunny weather. The bluish tint gives the color of the cloudless sky, reflected in the ice crystals. This shade does not require correction. In cloudy weather, the color of the snow will be grayish, try correcting it with exposure. Ideal shooting times are dusk or dawn, when the low position of the sun on the horizon creates elongated shadows. They emphasize the texture of the snow surface.
Step 4
Pay close attention to the white balance settings to bring the snow closer to its natural color. Choose the appropriate setting, found in most cameras. When shooting in cloudy weather, increase the exposure from +0.7 to +1.5 and the snow will appear whiter in the photo. Check the brightness histogram - it should be shifted to the right. If you are shooting in bright sun, use a lens hood or set the white balance manually, choosing a flat area of a snowy surface as a reference.
Step 5
Increase the shutter speed when shooting a winter landscape during a snowfall - the flight of snowflakes will become visible in the photo. In heavy snow, try using a flash - the frame will acquire additional volume.
