Biography
John Osborne was born in London in 1929. His father, Thomas Osborne, worked as an advertising artist and also made a living writing text for flyers. Mother, Nilly Beatrice, worked as a waitress in London's Cockney area.
In 1935, the family moved to Surrey, a suburb of London. John found himself in cultural isolation, he could not find a common language with his classmates, their interests seemed too boring to him. During this period, his father becomes his best friend. The boy has a strained relationship with his mother, he lacks her attention. Later, he recalled her "constantly calculating and indifferent."
John's father died in 1941. He left the boy a certificate to study at Belmont College, located in Devon. John entered there in 1943, but due to the difficulties that arose, he left the training in 1945.
Osborne returned to his mother in London, got a temporary job as a journalist covering events in business.
Career
The company of Osborne's acquaintances, aspiring actors, invited him to participate in the troupe. John agreed, began working as a stage manager, and also took part in performances as a supporting actor.
In 1950, in collaboration with Stella Linden, he wrote the script for the play The Devil Within Him, which was later staged at the Theater Royal in Huddersfield.
In 1956 he creates his most significant piece, Look Back in Anger. The play is largely autobiographical. The protagonist of the work, Jimmy Porter, is an intelligent and educated young man who suffers from his working-class family. Jimmy's agony is intensified by his marriage to Alisson, who belongs to the upper class of the wealthy townspeople.
Critics' reviews of the play varied widely. Immediately after the premiere, many of them called the play a failure, but a week later there were positive reviews in which it was strongly recommended to watch the play. The show was a great commercial success.
In the early sixties, Osborne presents The Entertainer to the public. The work metaphorically describes the decline of the British Empire and the rise of American influence.
Personal life
In 1951 he married Pamela Lane. A happy family life did not work out, Pamela often cheated on John. He described his torment over his wife's infidelity in the play Look Back in Anger.
Osborne was married five times, it is difficult to count his mistresses and casual lovers.
Most of my life I was a principled vegetarian.
He died in 1994 from complications of diabetes. His last wife, Helen, is buried next to him in Clan, England.
