It is more interesting for a child to study the world if he is surrounded not only by functional things, but also beautiful, and even more so, sewn by the hands of a caring mother! It will be comfortable to play on a rug in the form of a seven-color flower, it will help you learn colors, and maybe textures, if, for example, you sew petals not only from cotton, but also from denim, silk, corduroy and various fabrics. And on the petals you can still embroider the letters of the baby's name, why not?
For a rug with a diameter of 100 cm you will need:
- fabric of bright colors (8-10 cuts of 40 x 40 cm);
- fabric for the center of the rug (150 x 75 cm);
- filler for the center of the rug (75 x 75 cm);
- synthetic fluff (for the "petals" of the rug);
- threads
For cutting a baby product, prepare a cardboard template (width 18 cm (allowances taken into account), and length 16 cm), with which you can make the "petals" of the rug. Fold the fabric for the rug “petals” in half. Transfer to the fabric folded in half using the template, 14 "petals" and cut out the double pieces.
Fold the fabric for the middle of the rug in half. Draw a circle on it, where the circumference is 231 cm and the diameter is 73.5 cm. Cut out the circle. Take a double "petal" piece of the same color. Fold right side in. Sew along the rounded edge with a 0.7 mm allowance. Leave the bottom straight cut unsewn.
Turn out the received parts. Iron. Fill each "petal" of the rug with filler. Also, each petal can be filled with cotton wool, rustling paper, silicone balls. Pin the pins to the edges to keep the filler from spilling out. Prepare the fabric for the center of the rug. Sew a straight cut of the first "petal" to its front side to the edge of the circle, while the "petal" must be turned to the center of the circle.
Spread out the filler inside the petals. Sew all the "petals" in this way. All of them should be directed towards the center of the circle. Place the second circle face down to the resulting workpiece and stitch it, leaving a gap of 20 cm unsewn. Unscrew the resulting product through the gap. Cut a circle with a diameter of 72 cm from the filler.
It is better to take the filler of the maximum thickness so that the rug turns out to be lush. The thin filler can be folded in two layers. Then the flow rate will double. Insert the filler through the gap. Spread out around the edges. Sew the gap with blind stitches. In the central part of the rug, sew any stitch so that the layers of the product are held together.
Decorative stitch
The stitch is always carried out from the middle to the edges. If the motifs are drawn only along the contour, the motif can be cut out and along it, as in a template, mark the stitch motif directly on the fabric. First, the stitch motifs should be transferred from the worksheet to the tracing paper. Then glue the tracing paper with the markings on a sheet of cardboard or film for templates and cut along the marked lines so that the parts of the pattern remain connected.
After that, through the resulting stencil, transfer the lines to the product with a marker or a silver pencil for textiles, continuing the lines in those places where they were interrupted during cutting (to preserve the integrity of the pattern). Now sweep the layers, laying large stitches of the seam "forward to the needle" between the pins, first from the middle towards the cuts in the form of rays, then in diagonal directions (distance between the lines of the basting stitches = 5-15 cm). When finished sweeping, remove the pins.
Hand stitch
The hand stitch is carried out with a specially designed short needle. To do this, first hoop the part using a round or rectangular hoop. Thread the thread into the needle, tie a knot at the end. Bring the needle up from the bottom to the desired point and pull the thread so that the knot gets stuck in the interlining. Place a thimble on the middle finger of your right hand.
With the ear, the needle should be resting on the thimble and injected back into the part so that the tip of the needle touches the finger of the left hand under the hoop. With the finger of your left hand, press on the bottom of the part, directing the needle back up and inject at a stitch distance. Pull the thread. You can also protect your left finger with a leather thimble or tape. Repeat the technique, making uniform stitches across all 3 layers of the piece.
Once you have developed this skill, you can sew multiple stitches at once by sticking in and out the needle before pulling the thread. In this way, a stitch is made along any lines of a wide variety of patterns. At the end of the stitch line, wrap the needle with the thread 3 times, stick it into the spacer, pass through it and after 2, 5–3 cm, bring it up again. Pull the thread slightly so that the small knot stays under the top layer.
Machine stitch
Insert a No.90 or special quilting needle and loosen the thread tension. The thickness of the upper and lower threads must be the same. It is better to use a special foot with the function of the top feed of the fabric, which will join all 3 layers of the part without pulling the fabric. To sew parallel lines, a special spacing stop is attached to the foot.
For freehand stitches, use a special darning foot or foot and set the feed dog to a lower position. The stitch is performed at a relatively high speed, guiding the stitch with slow hand movements. The coordination of sewing speed and hand movement depends on the stitch length.
