To draw a gopher, you will need several materials at once. Watercolor will help to convey color transitions on his skin, and the texture of the wool will be emphasized by strokes of pencil and ink. This combination will create a realistic image of the animal on paper.

It is necessary

  • - paper;
  • - a simple pencil;
  • - eraser;
  • - watercolor;
  • - watercolor pencils;
  • - ink;
  • - brushes;
  • - palette.

Instructions

Step 1

Take a sheet of A3 watercolor paper and place it horizontally. Make a pencil sketch, roughly indicating the location of the object and the proportional ratio of its parts.

Step 2

Build a "skeleton" of the picture, considering the object as a collection of geometric shapes. His head is a pyramid, the top of which is directed towards the viewer. In an exaggerated form, imagine the front legs as cylinders, the body in the foreground has a spherical shape, and the side part is an elongated ellipse. Such a schematized image will help you correctly identify the location of the object in space and understand how the volume is constructed.

Step 3

Pass the junction points of the legs and body with a smooth curved line, clarify the shape of the body parts, bringing the strict geometric contours closer to the real outlines of the gopher. When the construction is completed, erase the extra auxiliary lines, and lighten those that remain visible with a nag eraser so that they are not visible under the paint.

Step 4

Start working with color. Use wide watercolor spots to mark areas of warm and cold shades: mix ocher and a little blue to fill the head, chest and legs of the animal, which are in the shade. Blur the light ocher stain on the lighted side of the gopher, and add warm dark brown to the back.

Step 5

Apply smaller strokes to refine the shape and color of the design. Add warm brick to the torso near the left paw, to the muzzle above the nose and near the eyes. Darken the shadows on the chest, on the sides of the face and on the upper back.

Step 6

Use sharpened watercolor pencils for precise strokes to convey the texture of the fur. Add lines between the eyes, near the paws on the chest and on the back. Use pencils a shade darker than the watercolor on the area you are painting. In the most illuminated areas, lightly wash the pencil with a brush soaked in clean water. Draw the gopher's whiskers with clear, very thin lines of black ink, drop it on the eye area, blur and add two watercolor highlights - blue on top and dark brown on the bottom.

Step 7

Work on the background in the same way. Create the back of it using large spots of watercolor, and paint the grass in the foreground on top of the paint with pencils.
