Layers are one of the basic concepts of Photoshop. It may seem that this is something difficult, but upon closer examination, everything turns out to be simple.
The concept of "layer" in Photoshop has the same meaning as in ordinary life - an interlayer / layer, which is part of something whole.
In order to see what a layer is in Photoshop, you need to create it.
Create a new document (File - New).
1st way to create a layer:
Main menu - tab Layer - New - Layer …
In the dialog box that appears, you can specify a name for the layer.

The window for working with layers should be displayed on the right on the desktop in Photoshop, if it is not there, then call it with the F7 key
In this window, on the right, click on the small arrow, then select the New Layer command from the drop-down menu. After that, the dialog box for creating a layer, which you have already seen, will appear.

In the lower panel of the window for working with layers, click on the button for creating a new layer. The dialog box will not appear in this case, but if you want to give the layer a name, then double-click on the word Layer 1.

Use the keyboard shortcut Shift + Ctrl + N
So, a square with a checkerboard appeared in the window for working with layers - this is a new layer. The checkerboard stands for transparency.
The layers can be thought of as a stack of transparencies on which the images are applied, if there is no image on the layer, then other layers can be seen through it. Layers allow you to work on one element of a drawing without affecting others.
