In the entire history of Soviet and Russian cinematography, few films of this genre were shot, however, there are representatives among them who deserve special attention.
The most famous horror film made by Soviet filmmakers was Viy (1967) directed by Georgy Kropachev and Konstantin Ershov. And although it was officially called the adaptation of the classic work of N. V. Gogol, the picture definitely needs to be ranked as a horror movie. The story of a student Homa Brut, forced to spend several nights in the company of terrible ghouls and a dead girl, frightened many generations of schoolchildren.
The film "Dogs" (1989) by Dmitry Svetozarov with Mikhail Zhigalov, Yuri Kuznetsov and Andrey Krasko in the lead roles, an unfairly forgotten story about wolf hunters who went to shoot animals attacking people. The picture turned out to be tense, atmospheric and has a philosophical overtones.
At the dawn of democracy, the story of the werewolf "Lumi" (1991) was filmed. But since the time turned out to be hectic, the viewer had no time to watch and evaluate such films. Several times shown on television "Lumi" has sunk into oblivion.
Russian films
Among the horror films of the post-Soviet period, there are only a few original tapes not copied from American slashers. The latter were criticized by viewers, expressed in numerous angry reviews, and in low ratings, and in failures at the box office ("Dead Daughters", "Lineman", "SSD", "Shopping Tour"). Only the story of the ruthless girl "Yulenka" was able to win the audience's interest.
Many consider the work of director Nikolai Lebedev "The Serpent Spring" (1997) to be the most terrible domestic film. It tells about a student Dina who arrived in a provincial town, where several similar girls were killed.
In the same year, Sergei Vinokurov's "The Ghoul" was released with Alexei Serebryakov in the title role. The plot is as follows: a hunter for ghouls comes to the city by order of a crime boss, who seize power in the village. After his arrival, his partner immediately dies, and the order is canceled, however, the main character is not going to leave this place so easily and decides to clear it of the creatures of darkness.
Soon a remake of the classic film "Wii" will be released on the screens of the country, new details and new characters should refresh the familiar plot. And it will soon be known whether this film will arouse interest among viewers.
