Fittonia can be propagated in several ways: using cuttings, layering and dividing the bush. Thus, you can get a lot of plants that will decorate the interior.
Step-by-step description of rooting cuttings
- Fittonia propagates by cuttings. Cut the shoots with three pairs of leaves and set them to root in the water.
- When roots appear, plant the cuttings in a light, loose and moist substrate made up of humus, leafy earth, sand and peat.
- Place the plant in a mini greenhouse with high humidity. To do this, cover the container with cuttings with a transparent plastic lid or glass jar. Within a few weeks, the cuttings will take root.
Pinch young plants to create lush, dense bushes. They quickly build up the green mass, and the bush becomes beautiful, although after about two years the shoots grow strongly, and the Fittonia loses its attractiveness, so it is better to update the bush.
Propagation of fittonia by layering
- The creeping stems of Fittonia take root very easily. This feature of the plant can be used for reproduction.
- Sprinkle a part of the stem with earth at a distance of 3-5 cm from the top of the shoot.
- After 1-2 weeks, the first roots will appear on the spot covered with earth.
- Cut off the stem with clean scissors or a sharp knife and let it sit for another 2 weeks for the cuttings to take root well.
- Dig up a new small plant carefully, being careful not to damage the roots.
- Transplant the cuttings into a separate pot with a nutrient medium made from one part humus, two parts leafy soil, one part sand and peat.
- Moisten the soil.
-
Cover the new plant with a clear plastic or glass jar. After a week, the mini-greenhouse can be removed.
Reproduction of fittonia by dividing the bush
Dividing a bush is another way of breeding a baby fittonia. Unlike cuttings and propagation of a plant by layering, which can be carried out all year round, fittonia bushes should be divided only in early spring, when the flower begins to grow.
- Examine the Fittonia bush and count the number of shoots. Each cut should contain two or three stems.
- Carefully remove the plant from their bowls. Shake off the soil and rinse the roots under running warm water.
- Use a clean knife or scalpel to cut the roots so that each cut has two or three shoots. Sprinkle the cut sites with crushed activated carbon and leave for about an hour to dry the cut slightly.
-
Plant the cuttings in separate pots. You can also plant them in one large bowl at a distance of 3-5 cm from each other. The more plants in one pot, the fluffier and more effective the bush.
