If you are serious about mastering Wing Chun, the Chinese wushu school, you will need a wooden dummy, also called a "wooden man". Having such a device, you can practice martial arts techniques not only in the gym, but also at home. The price of a "wooden man" can reach several hundred dollars, so it is better to make a mannequin with your own hands in a home workshop.

Instructions

Step 1

Any type of wood can be used to make the main dummy log. The main thing is that it is well dried to avoid cracking. For the manufacture of "arms" and "legs" use the best hardwood - elm, maple, oak. These parts of the mannequin are subject to significant mechanical stress, therefore, the presence of knots, streaks and other wood defects is unacceptable.

Step 2

The Wing Chun "wooden man" is a cylindrical wooden pillar. The height of the pillar is 150-190 cm, the diameter is 20-25 cm. In the upper part of the "body" there are two upper "arms" inserted into the holes. The third (middle) "hand" is located under the top two. Under the "middle arm" there is a mannequin "leg" bent at the "knee joint".

Step 3

The dummy is rigidly attached to the floor or dug into the ground. Now you can find structures in which the "body" of the dummy is mounted on a frame of two bars passing through the holes in the upper and lower parts of the post. It is also possible that the "wooden man" can be mounted on a rotating base or on a spring.

Step 4

The Wing Chun dummy is an individual projectile, its sizes can be different depending on the height and complexion of the person exercising with it. Before making a "wooden man" think over its design and transfer your calculations to a drawing or sketch.

Step 5

The most time consuming part of the process is making the mannequin "body". You will have to give the log a cylindrical shape (the log is thicker at the butt). Remove the bark with an ax and chop off the branches. Hurry up the protruding areas.

Step 6

Use an electric plane to draw the cylindrical shape of the post. Use a sturdy cardboard or plastic mold. Sand the post with sandpaper. Then moisten it with water and let it dry. After drying, polish the product with a coarse cloth or felt. The surface should be as smooth as possible.

Step 7

The easiest way to make "hands" is to rigidly fix the sticks on the pole. Such an attachment is convenient when installing the "wooden man" close to the wall. More complex options involve the use of springs that provide longitudinal movement of the "arms".

Step 8

The leg can be made in one of several ways. A construction welded from a metal pipe and wrapped in a soft material is possible. The second option is a “leg” made of wood, assembled from parts. Only hardwoods should be used. You can also make a solid wooden "leg" by carefully choosing the workpiece taking into account the bend.

Step 9

After making all the elements, cover them with stain and varnish. Paint metal parts. After drying, the "wooden man" is once again polished with felt, assembled and installed at the training site. Interior walls or a loggia are best suited for placing a mannequin.
