At the dawn of the last century, when fishing hooks were a rarity in the everyday life of fishermen, Russian men managed to catch carp without the help of a hook. A sinker was placed on a primitive fishing line, behind which there was a loop, where a leash with a button and a nozzle were attached. As a nozzle used "makuhi" - pressed linseed, sunflower or hemp cake. With the help of steamed bread or clay, the “makuha” was attached to the button.

Throwing in the evening his simple tackle in the feeding place of the carp and carefully fixing it on the shore, the fisherman returned home. Approaching the bait, the fish began to suck on the cake. The button did not in the least alarming her, and it fell into the mouth of the mouth. After finding indigestible food, the fish pushed the button with a stream of water through the gills and found itself on a kind of kukan, holding it securely there. In the morning, the successful fisherman checked his "top" and pulled out the enemy, who was rather tired of trying to free himself, to the shore. The fisherman could only "recharge" the makuha and, having thrown it into the river, go about his business.

To avoid mistakes made when catching carp with this ancient tackle, you need to know a little trick. Hooks should not be placed in the cake, as most modern anglers do. It is better to make four notches with a knife at the corners of the cake, slightly exceeding the size of the hooks. Then coat the grooves with clay and place the hook. After that, you need to apply a thin layer of clay again, lay the leash in a neat figure eight, and add another layer of clay. This will completely mask the hooks and leashes from the cautious fish, without interfering with sucking on the cake.
