The creation of paintings from colored sand is an incredibly beautiful and unusual art form. But making colored sand for creativity in itself can be an exciting process for both kids and adults. Colored sand is a simple mixture of ordinary sand and dye (it can be of different types). You can use the sand of all colors of the rainbow made with your own hands to create images in the original technique or fill glass containers with it to decorate the interior.

It is necessary

  • - Light-colored sea or river sand;
  • - dyes: tempera powder, gouache, food colors, aerosol paints;
  • - small containers;
  • - water;
  • - stick or spoon for mixing sand;
  • - paper for drying sand (newspapers, paper towels, etc.).

Instructions

Step 1

Find the required number (according to the number of colors in which you plan to paint the sand) of small containers for making colored sand. It is very convenient to use Ziplock bags for this purpose, which are fastened according to the principle of a zipper. When mixed in such bags, the sand mixes well with the dye and does not spill out.

Step 2

Take sand and sift it through a sieve to remove unwanted pebbles, blades of grass, and similar debris. The lighter the sand you find, the more vibrant the color will be as you paint it.

Step 3

Fill the prepared containers with sand about three quarters (so that later it is convenient to mix the sand, and it does not spill out of the jar or bowl). Do not paint the sand at the same time in large quantities, since it will take a long time to dry it, and it will paint over weakly and unevenly.

Step 4

If you use dry tempera powder to color the sand, add the dye to the dry sand (about one teaspoon of dry tempera to half a glass of sand) and mix them thoroughly. Then add a little water to keep the sand wet. Stir the mixture well again, ensuring that the sand is evenly colored.

Step 5

If you are using food coloring or paints diluted in water, then it is better to wet the sand first, and then add paint to it. After that, mix the mixture thoroughly, evenly distributing the coloring pigment in the sand mass.

Step 6

When mixing ingredients in a jar or bowl, use a stick or spoon. In bags, sand is mixed with dye by massaging hand movements - this process resembles kneading dough.

Step 7

After mixing the sand with the dye, leave the mixture for about 30 minutes so that the sand is well painted over.

Step 8

Pour the colored sand onto sheets of paper or large-diameter disposable paper plates. Spread out the sand in as thin a layer as possible and dry within 24 hours.

Step 9

The colored sand is now ready for further use in your art.
