Batik is the art of fabric painting. Depending on the technique of execution, cold, hot batik and free painting are distinguished. Performing creative work to create batik is a complex and time-consuming process. The main technique used when painting fabric is reservation, i.e. coating with a paint-resistant surface composition that must remain unpainted.
Instructions
Step 1
To begin with, if you decide to learn the batik technique, try to paint a small thing yourself, such as a scarf or scarf. For the first experiment, cotton fabric is suitable. The purity of the batik technique depends on the quality of the fabric. Some materials (for example, synthetic chiffon, silk of poor quality) do not saturate the reserve, so the colors spread beyond the boundaries of the pattern. Wash the fabric with soap, dry and iron before use.
Step 2
Pull the fabric tightly over the frame. It should not sag, otherwise the paint will run off.
Step 3
Prepare tools for work: paints, brushes, tampons, a tube for applying a pattern, the thin end of which can be used to paint the fabric with graceful patterns.
Step 4
Reserving agent can be purchased in the store, as well as paints for painting on fabric. It would be ideal to purchase a set for painting, which includes a reserve composition, a tube and basic colors. Of course, such a composition can be prepared at home, but this is not recommended for a beginner batik lover.
Step 5
Adjust the consistency of the reservation compound. To do this, draw test lines on the piece of fabric you are working with. Wait until it is completely dry and check for penetration.
Step 6
Before applying the pattern to the work surface, practice translating the pattern on an unnecessary piece of fabric. The hand must get used to the new instrument. Take a simple drawing sample for the first time.
Step 7
Use paints that are ironed onto the fabric. If the applied line is smeared, try to remove it with a compound specially designed for this purpose (for example, white spirit). If this fails, at the end of the work, such "extra" or blurred lines are turned into an element of the composition.
Step 8
Since you are just starting to master the batik technique, drops and extra strokes will appear on the working canvas. They can be blurred by turning them into a background element. If you have translated the pattern with a pencil and cannot remove it from the fabric, these lines can be painted over with a bright color or a layer of colored reserving compound can be applied.
Step 9
Secure your design to the fabric with a hot iron.
