Cold batik is a method of painting on fabric, in which a cold reserve composition is used, which prevents the paint from spreading over the canvas. This technique is used to make shawls, scarves, stoles, decorative panels, curtains, etc.

Instructions

Step 1

A characteristic feature of cold batik is that all forms of the pattern have a closed loop made by a reserve composition. Therefore, works in this technique resemble stained glass. The reserve composition is applied to the contours of the drawing with special glass tubes with a curved end and a small spherical reservoir.

Step 2

Almost all thin and dense fabrics are suitable for cold batik. Although, of course, this technique looks brightest on natural silk. Before starting work, the fabric is pulled on a stretcher and fixed with buttons or special brackets.

Step 3

The reserving compound can be purchased at art stores or you can make your own. You need to take 100 g of "A" brand rubber glue, 100 ml of gasoline, 25 g of paraffin and 1 g of rosin. Pour gasoline into a small saucepan, dissolve the glue in it, add rosin and finely cut paraffin. Place the dishes in a water bath and cook for 15 minutes, not boiling. When all components are dissolved until smooth, remove the dishes from the stove. Let the composition brew for a day before use.

Step 4

The thickness of the pattern outline is determined by the diameter of the working end of the glass tube. This parameter also determines the speed with which the reserve composition will flow onto the fabric. Before starting work, it is better to stock up on several tubes, since their nose is fragile and can easily break.

Step 5

The tube should be guided smoothly and evenly over the fabric so that no contour breaks or blots appear. The instrument should be lowered onto the fabric and lifted quickly and carefully. This will avoid thickening the contour lines. The appearance of the future picture largely depends on the quality of the application of the reserve composition.

Step 6

After drawing the contour, the work should dry out. However, it should not be left unfinished for more than 24 hours. Fats released from the reserving compound can be absorbed into the fabric and prevent the dye from settling evenly.

Step 7

Fabric paints are also sold at art stores. You cannot use ordinary watercolor or gouache, as they do not adhere well to the canvas. They are not only washed out during washing, any drop of water that falls on a drawing with watercolor or gouache leaves a noticeable mark. Paints are applied to the canvas with a contour with cotton swabs, if it is necessary to paint over a large area. Individual details are drawn with ordinary artistic brushes of different sizes.

Step 8

If quality materials were used in the work, the painted fabric can be washed and ironed without any damage to the pattern.
