Emilia Clarke is the famous actress who portrayed Daenerys Targaryen in Game of Thrones. In addition to the popular TV series, she starred in several major Hollywood films, as well as theatrical productions.
early years
Emilia Clarke was born on October 23, 1986 in London, but spent most of her childhood in the provincial town of Berkshire. The father of the future actress went a long career path from a simple worker to a sound engineer for famous musicals, and her mother devoted her life to entrepreneurship. It was her father's work that became for Emilia the road to the world of theater and cinema: already at the age of three, the girl was truly fascinated by the stage and dreamed of it.
In 2004, after graduating from high school, Emilia entered the London Drama Center, which once trained such famous actors today as:
- Tom Hardy;
- Anne-Marie Duff;
- Paul Bettany.
Thanks to her talent, Emilia Clarke, already in her student years, played in significant productions on the stage of the London Drama Theater. In 2007, she played Anna Petrovna in the English adaptation of Chekhov's play "Fatherlessness", as well as the role of Eliza Dullittl in the play "Pygmalion" by Bernard Shaw. Critics and teachers spoke very warmly about Emilia's game, and soon she began to receive offers from eminent directors.
Later, the actress got roles in eight productions, including:
- Emilia Galotti;
- "A dream in a summer night";
- "Wake up and sing."
She was also noticed by Russian directors Oleg Miroshnikov and Vladimir Mirodan, who provided roles in the performances "The Inspector General", "Hamlet" and "Substitution".
The beginning of a film career
The first appearance of Emilia Clarke on television took place in 2009: the young actress starred in the TV series Doctors as Saskia Mayer. It was a completely successful project, which, nevertheless, did not bring popularity to Emilia. After graduating from the London Drama Center, the actress moved to Los Angeles.
In the United States, the girl began working in the famous non-profit Hollywood theater - "Company of Angels". Critics immediately praised her participation in the play "Feeling". In 2010, Emilia made a new attempt to hit the silver screen with the role of the adventurer Savannah in Attack from the Triassic.
Filming in the TV series "Game of Thrones"
For almost the entire year, the 24-year-old actress lived in a rented apartment and barely earned a living, but at the same time she did not lose hope of getting a role in a significant Hollywood project. Her friends supported her, trying to share all known information about any upcoming filming. Once an agent called her and said that HBO is looking for an actress who could play the role of the Khaleesi Queen Daenerys Targaryen in the TV series Game of Thrones, which is based on the novels of science fiction writer George Martin.
Initially, Emilia did not know at all who she was going to play, and spent a lot of time studying the facts about the fictional world of Westeros and the character of Daenerys. As a result, she realized that the project should turn out promising and signed up for an audition. During the casting, the producers praised the young actress's play, but suggested dyeing her hair white to better match the book character.
Emilia Clarke complied with the request, becoming a blonde, and as a result was approved for the role. The producers did not regret their choice: the actress perfectly matched the image created by George Martin: the ash-haired Daenerys Targaryen looked great in any outfit, jumping in a simple cape on a horse, walking in a silk cassock in the garden and even completely naked in explicit scenes.
In the story, young Daenerys, married to the ruler of the wild people Khal Drogo, discovers the powers of her ancient Targaryen clan and becomes the "mother" of three dragons. She decides to reclaim the royal throne in Westeros. The audience fell in love with the character of Emilia Clarke: the young queen bribed with courage and dedication, as well as an amazing ability to be moderately cruel and merciful.
Having starred in several episodes of the series, the actress signed a contract for subsequent seasons. Together with other actors of the project, which received the highest marks from viewers and critics, she was nominated for various television awards. In 2015, Emilia's collection consisted of the Emmy and Saturn statuettes for Best Supporting Actress in a Television Project. And in 2012, the AskMen portal ranked her among the 99 most desirable women in the world.
After the huge success in Game of Thrones, Emilia Clarke was actively invited to shoot in Hollywood and British films. In 2012, she starred in the drama "Spike Island", and a year later - in the comedy "House of Hemingway" with Richard Grant and Jude Law. In 2013, the actress got the role of Sarah Connor in the sequel to the cult action movie Terminator Genisys with Arnold Schwarzenegger. This was followed by a role in the romantic drama "Me Before You." Finally, in 2018, she appeared in a significant role in the spin-off of the Star Wars movie series, Han Solo.
Emilia Clarke's personal life
The young actress never hid her personal life. Since September 2012, she has dated Hollywood director Seth Macfarlane. In 2013, the couple's relationship began to deteriorate. One of the reasons was the diagnosis of an aneurysm in Emilia, which, fortunately, was healed, but the actress was going through this period hard. In addition, she was credited with a new romance with Game of Thrones partner Keith Harrington, who played the role of another potential contender for the iron throne of Westeros, Jon Snow.
Over the course of several years of filming the series, Emilia Clarke and Keith Harrington often appeared in public together. They were seen walking the streets, in various cafes and at social events. However, in the end, the actress stated that she maintains extremely friendly relations with Keith, as well as with other filming partners, including:
- Peter Dinklage;
- Nikolai Waldau;
- Richard Madden.
Kit Harrington also denied rumors of a love affair, and after a while announced a relationship with another actress from the series - Rose Leslie, who played the role of "wild" Ygritte. Currently, Emilia Clarke rarely appears in public, and her current personal status is not known: she spends most of the time filming in the final season of "Game of Thrones", which will be released on television in 2019.
