Before you start painting a picture on a stretched canvas, you need to process it. The surface of the canvas should be flat. In addition, the oil on which the paints are prepared tends to penetrate the fabric. A picture painted on a raw base will be very short-lived. The stretched canvas must be glued and then primed.

Step 1
Measure out the water and gelatin. The ratio should be 15: 1. It is best to do this with laboratory glassware and laboratory scales. If you are going to be constantly painting, buy at least one mug with graduations. If nothing like this is at hand and is not expected, you will have to take approximate proportions. For one 200-gram glass of pure water, take a tablespoon of gelatin. Place the gelatin in a jar and cover with water. Any dish except aluminum can be used. Let the gelatin swell.
Step 2
Pour water into a saucepan and heat it to about 70 ° C. Keep the container with gelatin in a water bath and stir occasionally. In no case should gelatin overheat, otherwise all your work will go down the drain. Do not take the risk and boil the water. The process cannot be ignored. Stir the gelatin until all of it dissolves.
Step 3
Cool the resulting mass. This is best done at room temperature. It is undesirable to put in the refrigerator or outside the window. Observe the state of the substance. The gelatin should cool down to the consistency of a not very liquid jelly. That is, it should no longer flow, but it is necessary that the mass remains sufficiently mobile.
Step 4
Lay the stretcher with canvas horizontally. Apply the gelatin with a wooden ruler or straight stick over the entire surface of the canvas. Try to make the layer more or less even. It is not recommended to use metal objects. Leave the canvas to dry for about ten hours. Sand it with fine sandpaper.
Step 5
Repeat the procedure. It is usually not possible to glue the canvas the first time, and this is not necessary. Just the opposite. Too much glue applied at one time causes the gelatin to seep onto the back of the canvas. Therefore, it is better to glue the fabric several times, applying the mass in a thin, but uniform and continuous layer. Remember to let the glue dry and sand the surface every time.
