Instructions

Step 1

Create a new document and then select the Bezier curve from the toolbar. Using any other mermaid image as an example, draw a silhouette using a Bezier curve, editing its shape using intermediate nodes on the lines.

Step 2

Use the Shape tool to edit and select all the nodes, then click the Convert line into curve button to convert the line to curves. The silhouette will become sleeker and less angular. Next, adjust the silhouette lines even more, making it smoother - select those nodes that need to be smoothed, and click the Make Node Smooth button on the toolbar. Remove unnecessary nodes.

Step 3

Start filling the silhouette of the mermaid with color. In the lower right corner of the program window, double-click and open the Fill Color window. Choose an RGB color scheme, and then choose an appropriate skin tone to fill your silhouette. In the Online Width list, select None to remove the outline.

Step 4

Duplicate the torso by selecting it and pressing the + key. Draw a large and a small figure in the chest area - make a highlight from the small figure, painting it with white. Now apply the Interactive fill tool by selecting the large chest shape around the highlight and clicking on the Copy fill properties button.

Step 5

Click on the silhouette of the future mermaid when you see the black arrow. Between the two shapes, using the Interactive blend tool, create an interactive space, shaping the outlines of the chest. Move the highlight a little further from the center of the body to define the outline of the chest. Color the highlight light beige so it doesn't stand out too brightly against the chest. Select the shape on the chest and select the torso, then Group them (Control-G).

Step 6

Activate the duplicated silhouette. Lock it (Lock Object) and start drawing the silhouette of green algae on the shape using the Artistic Media Tool. Adjust the brush and press Ctrl + K. Apply a linear gradient from light green to dark green to the lines you paint with the brush.

Step 7

Draw twisting algae on the body and cut them along the outline, unlocking the body - select the Shift Page Up function. Blend bodypainting onto the original torso by selecting it and choosing the Aling and Distribute option. Press Ctrl + U to ungroup the silhouette. Make a linear gradient.

Step 8

Then draw the mermaid tail - its general shape, then create a single scale and color it in two similar shades. Duplicate the scale and group. Open the window for duplicating many scales by pressing Alt + F7 and check the box to the right of the original scale. Click Apply to duplicate.

Step 9

Group the horizontal row of scales and place it at the base of the mermaid tail, then create an interactive blend. Activate the scales and set the Interactive envelope effect. Convert the scales to curves and then paint the tail in aqua.

Step 10

Apply the lens tool to the scales. Press Shift page up to trim the scales along the contour of the tail. Blur the edges and paint the mermaid hair, fins, arms, face - your mermaid is ready.
