Instructions
Step 1
It is preferable to choose a book with a hard cover, with a hard, sturdy cover and rather thick. It is best to choose an inconspicuous book that will not be a valuable publication to anyone and will not attract undue attention. The paper and cover, frayed over time, yellowed, faded, give these books a special charm. After the book is selected, PVA glue should be diluted, starting preparation for work.
Step 2
It is most convenient to mix the glue in a small bowl, choosing the proportions of glue to water as 3: 1 or 3: 2, and apply with a small flat brush with a hard bristle. The back cover, which will serve as the bottom of the cache, is coated with glue completely, the last book sheet or a couple of sheets is glued to it. To avoid air bubbles and other irregularities, they pass over the freshly glued sheets with a foam roller, a soft dry cloth or a ruler.
Step 3
The rest of the pages are glued according to the same principle, but not entirely, but only along the perimeter. They retreat from the edges by no more than 2-3 cm. You can leave a few free sheets at the beginning of the book so that they cover the cache. Depending on the thickness of the book, this can take a couple of weeks, since every 0.5 cm of glued pages should be completely dried under a press to avoid deformation. Pages can dry in a few hours, but it is safer to leave them for a day. So that the pages to be glued do not touch the pages that have not yet been started when drying, it is advisable to place a plastic bag or a silicone mat between them, to which the glue does not stick.
Step 4
After all the pages to be glued are glued and well dried, you can start cutting. On the first of the glued pages, markings are made using a pencil and a ruler of the desired shape, stepping back from the edges of the book as much as intended. After that, with a clerical knife, they carefully cut through the pages to the very last, in several stages. You can use a ruler to keep the edges from converging inward, if not originally intended. You can first cut out the middle, and then glue the outline of the pages along the edge, but this is more likely to get uneven edges and a depression, because the paper will inevitably move when gluing.
Step 5
When all the excess is cut out, the inner edges of the cache are also smeared with glue. This is for added strength and for smoothing. You can decorate the inside of the cache, as well as the outside, in a variety of ways. You can paint it from the inside or apply a structural paste, you can paste it over with cloth or paper, you can even leave it as it is. To prevent the book from opening immediately, you can insert several strong magnets into both covers from the edges during the cutting and gluing process, taking care that they do not tear the paper. To do this, there must be at least 5-6 sheets between them on each side. You can sew a button on the cover, and on the other hand - a loop, or, in the medieval manner, simply pull the book with a belt.
