You have written a book, such as a collection of poetry or a novel by women, and you want to donate your work to your friends. And you have no money for typographic design. Nothing wrong. With patience, perseverance and certain skills, you can bind your gift edition yourself, at home. To make a book binding, you will need the most basic tools and materials.
It is necessary
Two boards, two clamps, a metal file, a glue brush, scissors, a knife, PVA glue, thick white threads, rope, gauze, cardboard, colored paper
Instructions
Step 1
Take the stack of sheets that make up your piece. It is best to use the A5 format, although you are free to choose other book sizes. The edge of the stack must be aligned. To do this, tap the different ends of the stack on the table surface, making sure that the pages form an even cut.
Step 2
After straightening the stack of paper, lay it down gently on the table. The edge of the stack should protrude slightly beyond the table, so it is more convenient to lubricate the spine. Carefully place the weight on top (a thick book will do). Now grease the spine of the future book with PVA glue and let it dry for a few minutes.
Step 3
After the glue has dried, remove the weight and slide the book away from the edge of the table. Place a board on top to cover the spine. Clamp the entire structure with two clamps and leave for a few hours. The initial gluing will make the book block suitable for later sawing.
Step 4
Now slide the stack to the edge of the table so that it doesn't interfere with the sawing of the block. Clamp the block with clamps. Mark the end of the block with a pencil, drawing lines after about 2 cm. Make cuts in the areas of the marking with a metal file. The cutting depth is about 1 mm. Make the cuts strictly perpendicular to the spine.
Step 5
Insert the strings into the cuts. If you are using a thread, then it must be folded several times and twisted. The rope in the cuts will strengthen the spine - it will not break, as is often the case with purchased glued books.
Step 6
Lubricate the spine with a thick layer of glue, making sure that the glue flows into each cut. Apply cheesecloth and rollers. In this form, leave the future book overnight to dry. Then remove the clamps, cut the ends of the ropes with a knife.
Step 7
Make two endpapers out of thick Whatman paper. Fold the sheet in half, apply glue to the edge of the sheet, and stick it onto the block. Then glue the second endpaper. Place the book under the load.
Step 8
Make a cover from cardboard. You will need two covers and a spine. The crust height should be 9 mm higher than the glued block, and the width should be equal to the block. The spine is equal in height to the crusts, in width it will correspond to the thickness of the block.
Step 9
Use colored paper to lining the cover. In size, it should be 2 cm larger than the lids. Now the gluing is to be done. Spread glue on one side of the crusts and spine and glue, pressing firmly. Place the printed title of the book on the cover. In this case, it is convenient to use preliminary pencil markings.
Step 10
Now it remains to connect the book block and cover together. Lubricate the edge of the fabric with PVA glue and glue it to the endpaper. Now lubricate the entire surface of the endpaper. Glue the endpaper to the cover, aligning the edges with the previously marked pencil marks. Glue the second endpaper in the same way. Now the book needs to be placed under the load for several hours to dry the glue. Your gift copy of the book is ready.
