In the age of e-books and the availability of information on the Internet, ordinary books and magazines, it would seem, should recede into the background and gradually give up their positions. However, that was not the case. Only in front of a paper book do you feel a real thrill, holding it in your hands, and you understand its fragility, gluing the pages with tape or mending a frayed binding. A book is still the best gift, and a handmade book is the best and most unique one. This guide will help you create a binding for your book.
Instructions
Step 1
Print your chosen artwork as brochures on A4 sheets. Form bundles of 10 sheets (40 pages). Sew the sheets of each brochure symmetrically to each other so that they do not creep apart in the future.
Step 2
Fold the books one on top of the other, according to the page numbering. Hold the stack of brochures in a vise or between two bulky objects, and place the third on top of the future book so that the brochures do not creep when filing. Use a hacksaw to make neat, shallow (4 mm) cuts along the butt end.
Step 3
Lubricate the part of the book on which you just made the saws with PVA glue. Don't spare the glue. In terms of thickness, plus another 6-8 cm, and the length of the book, cut a strip of any thin fabric (preferably cotton). You can use gauze or a bandage folded in 2 times. Attach the fabric to the binding.
Step 4
Cut the cover from fabric, thick and thin cardboard. When marking rectangles on thick cardboard, follow the dimensions - add 0.5 cm to the width. On thin cardboard, draw the outline of the end of the book, having previously measured the thickness of the glued brochures. We draw two rectangles on the fabric: the first is as long as the entire cover, and the second is 4-6 cm longer than the width of the book.
Step 5
Treat the second (longer) fabric rectangle with glue. Place thin cardboard in the middle. Step back 5 mm. and glue two-millimeter cardboard rectangles on each side.
Step 6
Flip the fabric, cardboard side down. Apply glue and place a second rectangle of fabric (the remaining, narrower one) in the middle of the cover and wrap the edges.
Step 7
Decorate the front of the book. Sign the title and author, or print the original cover and stick it on your book. Cover the paper with self-adhesive oilcloth to protect it from abrasion.
Step 8
The glue on the brochures is dry, so you can start further decorating and gluing the book. Open the first stack of sheets in the middle and, using a needle and thread, through the cuts made, sew the brochure to the fabric. Do this with each volume. Place glue on the end of the book and place it in the middle of the cover. Wait for the PVA to dry.
Step 9
Unfold the fabric sticking out at the edges, glue it to the cover. Cover up the glue marks with two A4 sheets, which place on top of all the ugliness on both sides of the opening of the book.
