Chub in May can be caught on the May beetle with a bottom or float rod. For a worm and other bait, they catch a fishing rod with a jig without a sinker and a float. The line must be taken the thinnest, otherwise the cautious fish will go to another hunting place.
The spring period for catching chub marks the end of April, and it ends in early June. At this time, when the water warms up a little and is cleared of turbidity, schools of fish appear in places with an average current, an uneven bottom and a depth of 1, 5 to 3 meters. Often, the chub chooses a place for itself at the bottom at the very beginning of the pit, and in the absence of large obstacles it can stand behind a medium-sized stone, piles and bridge supports.
May beetle fishing
The most important bait in May is the worm and the beetle. The beetle must be inserted from below into the chest plate so that the sting of the hook freely comes out of the rear of the insect. For fly fishing, the hook is passed through the back between the wings, which allows the insect to flounder for a long time and swim on its belly. The hooked chub does not swallow the beetle - it jerks up on the fishing line unharmed, which makes it possible to catch 4-5 fish per bait.
To catch the May beetle, you can use a bottom or float rod. The latter is good when the fish rises to the surface of the water. The rod must have a reel and guides. Together with a weighted float, this will allow you to make long throws of the nozzle and release it downstream for a long distance. In addition, such a running tackle makes it possible to use a thin line and deceive cautious and vigilant fish. A line of 0.22-0.25 mm will be enough, since it is quite capable of withstanding the resistance of a chub of almost any weight. The descent should be carried out from 0.5 to 1 m.
When fishing with this tackle, it is recommended to attach a sinker to the line 12-15 cm from the hook. In this capacity, you can use a small lead plate. As for the color of the float, it is better if it is black, gray or brown - the one that the fish are used to.
Other ways of fishing
Chub bites well on nozzles made of dough, bread crusts and pellets. While there is no May beetle, you can use such a bait and go fishing from the coastal spit or from a waggle. In this case, you should arm yourself with a fishing rod with a jig without a sinker and a float. All that may be needed is a rod 4-5 m long, guides and a reel with a line reserve of at least 25-30 m. The jig with a worm, maggot, beetle larva or dough must be released downstream, and then slowly pulled. It is necessary to try to keep the bait more often at the bottom and half-water, as the current will carry it to the surface all the time. To prevent such a situation, you need to often tilt the rod towards the water.
Preference should be given to homemade jigs, which have a teardrop shape and a length of 20 mm. It is better to take the hook number 6. Commercial jigs cause too many hook misses and fish off the hook. In this way, you can catch chub throughout the warm season by changing the nozzle. The only condition is to have at least one more place for fishing in stock, since after catching one or two fish you no longer have to wait for a bite.
