The Swedish ice screw Mora is one of the most popular on the market. Its operational capabilities primarily depend on the correct operation of the hemispherical knives. Sometimes it happens that after falling into river sand or woody bottom layers, these knives become dull and become unusable.

It is necessary

  • - electric grinder;
  • - emery wheel;
  • - diamond file;
  • - finishing block;
  • - grinding paste.

Instructions

Step 1

To restore the blades of Mohr's ice ax, it is necessary to determine the "cutting angle" or, as it is also called, the effective "incline of the cutting edge". It should stop at the stage of visual observation. You should not try the sharpness of the knives with your hands, you can cut yourself severely.

Step 2

Turn on the electric sharpener, having previously selected a convex emery wheel of the required diameter, and start adjusting the angle of the knife bend

Step 3

Press the knife against the emery wheel. At first, work with considerable force, the knife should fit snugly and have constant contact with the wheel. At the same time, watch out for the smoothness of the movement. If your hand trembles, you will have to repeat the procedure again. Pay particular attention to the distance from the mounting holes to the cutting edge of the knife. Since several knives are involved in the work of Mora's ice ax, they must necessarily be equal in terms of the parameters of a one-time area and depth of cut. Otherwise, the ice screw will be extremely ineffective, or it may just get stuck in the ice.

Step 4

After the angle of the knife is adjusted, proceed to sharpen its cutting edge. For this process, the electric sharpener will already be useless, so you need to use a diamond file. This tool can be either round or semicircular.

Step 5

Form the cutting edge of the knife with a file. Sharpening should be done by holding the tool perpendicular to the blade. It is necessary to regulate the applied forces depending on the stage of work. At first, the movements should be tight and strong. Close to the end of sharpening, work with the file very lightly, "stroking" the blade. After finishing work, gently rinse the knife with water and wipe dry.

Step 6

Grind the cutting edge with a cylinder-shaped finishing block. Without grinding, the ice screw knife will again have to be sharpened after a couple of holes. Do not forget to rinse the block and the knife blade more often, proceed in the same way as with a file, adjusting the forces applied to the finishing block and visually controlling the quality of grinding work. An even shine on the cutting edge indicates successful grinding.
