A couple of decades ago, smelt was caught literally everywhere in St. Petersburg and the Leningrad Region. Every spring, fishermen with rods and festoons stood literally on all the embankments and bridges of the Northern capital, and a catch of more than two hundred fish was considered the norm. The amount of smelt has dropped dramatically over the past decade. In addition, epidemiologists do not recommend catching it in the city. Now this fish, smelling of cucumbers, is caught mainly in the Gulf of Finland.

Smelt in the Gulf of Finland can be caught at any time of the year. Fishermen of the Leningrad Region do this most often in winter. For winter fishing, you need to properly prepare. A winter box with all the contents and a Finnish sleigh, which is most convenient for transporting it, can be bought at any store that sells goods for anglers. It is better to take a thin line, about 0.2 mm. It is less visible. It is better to prepare several rods with different weights. The weight of the lead depends on where you are going to fish. There are places with quite strong currents in the Gulf of Finland. In this case, the weight of the sinker should be larger.

Smelt is caught with a jig. Get a colorful jig. The fact is that in different situations smelts prefer different shades. So far, no researcher has been able to explain why this is happening. Therefore, it is better if you have white, yellow and green jigs. Keep in mind that all of them must be involved, otherwise they will lose their properties very quickly in the light.

Experienced fishermen of the Leningrad region very often use the so-called "floor-work" The fact is that smelt can be caught at different depths. Therefore, tie several jigs to the same main line at a distance of one and a half meters from each other. Usually a "bookcase" is made of two or three attachments, less often - of four.

The use of a spoon is very effective. She is tied to a leash between two jigs. The spoon should be very light and resemble a small fish in shape.
Step 5
Prepare your tackle for bait fishing. Perch is best, so bring some bloodworms with you.
Step 6
Decide exactly where you will fish. The most "fruitful" places are located on the southern coast of the Gulf of Finland. But a border zone begins between Bolshaya Izhora and Lebyazhy. If you have friends who live in these territories, ask them to make you a pass. This is the fastest option. The basis for travel to the border zone can also be a document on the ownership of the land plot. The pass can also be obtained in St. Petersburg, specifying sightseeing or recreation as the basis. In this case, you can safely go fishing in the area of Krasnaya Gorka or Gray Horse, where smelt is best caught.
Step 7
Do not forget to look at the website of the government of the Leningrad region. Ice on the Gulf of Finland is not always safe for fishermen. The governor usually issues orders banning or lifting the ice. Winter fishing enthusiasts often violate this prohibition, but this is, firstly, dangerous, and secondly, it is an administrative offense for which a fine can be imposed.
Step 8
If you could not get a pass, you will have to choose a place closer to St. Petersburg. The site is not particularly large, it is located in the area of the dam, between Bolshaya Izhora and Bronka on the one hand and Kronstadt on the other. There are usually a lot of fishermen there in winter, but you need to stay away from the fairway. Experienced anglers do not recommend fishing on the other side of the dam.
Step 9
Catch a few fish for bait near the shore. It is best if they are fry. You can, of course, fish with large fish, cut into pieces, but this method is less effective.
Step 10
Move away from the shore. Try to find a level spot between the hummocks. Drill several holes and place several fishing rods in each. The bite will not be long in coming.
