Shooting icy surfaces with a regular camera is not easy - with a cloudy sky, the photo will have a low contrast, and on color film, the overall tone of the photo will be blue.

Step 1
Explore specialized photography literature. Having learned about a number of features of such photos, you can achieve beauty of the picture, avoiding monotony and an excessive amount of blue or gray shades.
Step 2
Only photograph snow and ice in bright sunlight, avoiding cloudy days and evenings.
Step 3
Choose the composition of the photo so that the solid white background is diluted with the presence of any bright detail - an unusual tree, a bench, a balloon, and so on. In backlit sunlight, shooting fresh snow on a sunny day will give you a bright and beautiful photo with sparkling snow in the sun and clear shadows from surrounding objects. In such shooting conditions, the sky will not merge with the snow, but will stand out in contrast with its blue tint.
Step 4
Set the exposure manually for competent shooting of white surfaces - the standard automatic exposure meter setting will not work for this. Take the readings of the exposure meter not from the general ice surface, but from the brightest and whitest fragment located next to the camera.
Step 5
Shooting problems can be caused by the fact that the glittering surface of snow or ice is a giant reflector, and the snow begins to reflect the blueness of the sky, after which the photo takes on a blue tone. In order to get rid of it and preserve the whiteness of the ice surface, shoot through a yellow filter, which should not be polarizing, so as not to lose the beautiful shine of the snow.
Step 6
Ice fragments also look beautiful in photographs taken using close-focal close-ups. Try practicing ice photography by capturing frosty and icy plants in macro mode. To enhance the sparkle of snow and ice, use a small, muffled flash if desired.
