Decoupage is a way of decorating various items. The origins of this technique must be sought in the distant 15th century. Now this kind of art has become popular again and has become widespread.

Step 1
The essence of the decoupage technique consists in sticking pictures of paper, fabric, napkins on the surface and coating the resulting composition with varnish to preserve and give the product a complete look. You can decorate any items: furniture, dishes, candles, boxes, clocks, flower pots. Combining decoupage with other techniques, for example, gilding or aging, gives unlimited possibilities in creativity.

It is not difficult to master decoupage; you do not need special equipment or special tools for this. To learn how to create masterpieces, you will need accuracy, patience, endurance. Start your acquaintance with this art form by mastering the basic technique. Watch master classes, training videos, read literature with instructions, you can take private lessons and combine training with practice.

Or you can study on your own, for this, purchase special napkins (ordinary dining rooms are also suitable) or decoupage cards, use photographs, interesting fabric motifs. For work, you will need scissors, brushes of different types, decoupage glue or PVA, varnish. Choose a small object for decoration with a solid, even surface: a box, a box, and prepare it for work - degrease, prime the wood with acrylic paint. Carefully cut out the fragments, separate the pattern layer from the napkin. If using pictures from a magazine or photograph, wet them and remove the bottom layer. The finer the motive, the more beautiful the product will look.
Step 4
Apply glue to the surface, attach a napkin, apply glue to it with a flat brush and gently smooth it, let the work dry and cover with several layers of varnish. Each subsequent layer is applied after the previous one has dried. There are other ways of gluing - apply acrylic varnish to the object, attach the cut motif, cover with baking paper and iron or dry with hot air (hairdryer).

Having mastered the basics and acquiring skills, you can swing at the decor of large surfaces, move on to more complex techniques - volumetric decoupage, shadow casting, and fabric decoration.
