Surely in your closets you have old woolen coats and felt hats gathering dust, which is a pity to throw away, and there is not enough imagination to attach them somewhere.
But there is an opportunity due to this bright and soft "semi-finished product" to make wonderful and very original things: floor rugs for the hallway and the nursery, coasters for hot dishes, wall applique mats, funny oven holders for the kitchen.
It is necessary
- Felt fabric, thick drape;
- Regular scissors;
- Curly scissors (if there is a need to cut a raised edge), sold in needlework departments;
- Glue gun (or good glue for gluing fabric);
- Thick cardboard or plywood (for the base under the wall mat);
- Cotton wool or synthetic winterizer for filling figures in the applique;
- Tape for potholders.
Instructions
Step 1
Floor mat.
1. Open the old garment, wash the pieces of fabric if necessary.
2. Schedule for yourself which pattern will prevail in your product: is it an explosion of contrasting colors or a gradual transition from one shade to another? How thick will the rug be?
3. Cut, depending on these requirements, strips of fabric of different lengths, but absolutely the same height: from 0.5 cm to 2.5 cm.
4. Begin to shape the pattern of the rug by twisting the strips of fabric tightly into tight "rolls", carefully gluing them together in each turn.
5. Roll a few of these "rolls" and, using your imagination, include them gradually in the general outline of the drawing, continuing to lay and wrap new strips of fabric around.
6. Finish carefully by gluing the end of the tape firmly. Trim uneven areas with scissors or a sharp knife.
Step 2
Wall-mounted application rug.
1. Draw or copy from the Internet a beautiful, simple fairy tale or everyday story that your child will like.
2. For the base of the background (which is glued to a solid base), you can put either a drape, or (if there is no such a large piece of drape) another fabric, flannel, for example.
3. Cut out the figures with scissors. If necessary, use scissors with a special zigzag edge, they will help you make the wavy edge very neatly.
4. Carefully lay out the figures according to the sketch.
5. If there is a need to give some objects a small volume, put a little cotton wool or padding polyester under the fabric.
6. Glue or neatly sew on the figures, embroider or draw the necessary details on them.
7. Pull your rug over a firm base and glue.
8. If you wish, you can arrange it with a frame, this will give the appliqué a completeness.
Step 3
Hot stand.
1. Cut the drape or felt into thin strips of the same width but of any length. Choose the color to your taste ("under a wooden saw cut", to match the color of your kitchen set or simply bright and pleasing to the eye).
2. Twisting into a tight "roll" and constantly gluing new strips, form the mat of the desired diameter.
Step 4
Potholders.
1. Cut a potholder of a certain shape ("heart", "apple", or "cats", as in the photo). If the drape is thick, you can use one layer, if thin, cut out two pieces.
2. Sew a single crochet or bias tape over the hem with contrasting yarn.
3. Embroider or glue the details of the drawing from another fabric (for example, the photo - eyes and mustache).
4. Sew on a lace loop or wooden loop.
