It is necessary

  • - cloth for tablecloths;
  • - threads to match;
  • - a needle;
  • - safety pins;
  • - scissors;
  • - sewing machine.

Instructions

Step 1

There are several ways to process the edge of a tablecloth or napkin, and the choice depends on the thickness and quality of the fabric. The denser the fabric, the larger the hem allowance should be.

Step 2

For a tablecloth made of thin fabrics: silk, satin, viscose, the seam allowance should be 1.5-2 cm. If you are sewing a tablecloth made of linen or other dense material, then the hem allowance should be 4-5 cm.

Step 3

Finish the corners of the tablecloth. Draw seam lines on the wrong side of the fabric.

Step 4

Fold the tablecloth right side in diagonally. Cut the fabric at the corners. Stitch them 2 mm back from the cut. Do the same for opposite corners of the tablecloth.

Step 5

Turn the tablecloth right over. Straighten the corners, helping yourself with nail scissors.

Step 6

Place the tablecloth on a smooth, flat surface (this can be a large table or do it on the floor). Fold the edge inward by 0.5 cm.

Step 7

Pin off the seam with safety pins and sweep. To keep the stitching straight, first try on an unnecessary piece of fabric and adjust it. Sew close to the edge.

Step 8

Iron the tablecloth. Remove the basting. To make the seam less visible, sew lace or braid from the front side.

Step 9

Tablecloths made of very thin airy fabrics are easiest to hem with a special hemming foot for a sewing machine, which is included in the kit for almost all modern sewing machines.

Step 10

You can also do the hemming by hand with a blind stitch. To do this, stick a needle from right to left. Grasp 1 or 2 strands of fabric and a few strands at the edge of the top fold of the hem. Try not to tighten the thread. Repeat stitches.

Step 11

If you need to process the edge of a round or oval tablecloth, then turn it over with a bias tape. Fold it in half, fold the edges inward and iron. Insert the edge of the tablecloth inward, baste and sew close to the edge. A beautiful tablecloth is ready.
