Upholstered furniture, if it is of good quality, is costly to change to a new one, just because its upholstery is slightly rubbed. It is easier to pick up a durable and beautiful fabric and sew a cover, which, moreover, can be removed and washed at any time.
It is necessary
- - Fabric for the cover;
- - Tailor's meter;
- - Pencil or crayon;
- - Sewing machine;
- - Percale;
- - Pins.
Instructions
Step 1
Upholstered furniture has an amazing variety of shapes, so before you sew a cover, for example, on an armchair, you will have to work hard to draw up a pattern.
If the cover will completely repeat all the details of the chair cut, then measure the dimensions along the seams of the upholstery. If you want to simplify the design of the cover, then draw the intended seam lines on the old upholstery with chalk. Usually, chairs do not have a strictly defined shape of parts, so you will have to make a lot of inserts, tucks and darts. If the inserts are wider than eight centimeters, then they can be decorated with piping or cord. On the armchair, mark the lines of the inserts with chalk - this will make it much easier to navigate when drawing up a pattern.
Step 2
When cutting on fabric, add 10 centimeters on each side - this will give additional freedom when fitting parts in place. Pay attention to the pattern of the fabric - whether you will adjust the details of the cover so as not to violate the integrity of the pattern or not, the layout of the pattern details depends on this.
For the final fabrication of the cover pattern, take a cheap, soft percale-type fabric, cut out the parts from it, and start fitting on the chair. After drawing all the sizes and cutting off the excess, sew the cover from the preliminary fabric.
Step 3
Put the cover on the chair and, if you find mistakes and shortcomings, correct them. Now you can change the seam lines if they don't fit well. The seams do not have to coincide with the old seams of the upholstery, you can make several options for the cover and, when trying on, determine the one that you liked the most.
Step 4
If you are satisfied with the result of the fitting, then use this percale cover to cut out the details from the main fabric. Sew ties or ribbons to the main parts before you start sewing these main parts together. A piping or decorative cord is sewn between the details. Stitch the provided ruffle of the seat cover with even folds and hem the bottom.
Step 5
Since the armrests are greasy faster, you can make them out of leatherette - the combo case looks great too. For children's furniture, choose bright fabrics to please the baby, equip the cover with large pockets with an elastic band for toys.
