Step 1
Before you pick up the brush, the idea of the painting should appear in your imagination. Since it can be fuzzy, changeable, immediately transfer it to the draft. Sketch the main essence of the work, and then bring the sketch to the end. Work out the composition of the future picture. Decide in what style it will be done, with what materials you will draw it.
Step 2
Depending on your decisions, choose a canvas format. If you want to save time, buy a canvas with a primer already stretched over a stretcher. Then you do not have to be distracted by preparatory work. The canvas itself must be fixed on a sketchbook or easel - the surface should be located vertically at the level of your eyes.
Step 3
Transfer your sketch from a draft to a large format. This can be done with a pencil if you plan to write with opaque paints, or charcoal. The charcoal lines will need to be loosened with a nag eraser. When constructing a picture, it is necessary to take into account the basic rules of perspective, composition, proportional ratio. However, depending on your creative intent, certain norms may be canceled or distorted.
Step 4
Make an underpainting for the picture. It is done with grisaille - one color of paint, diluted with water or whitewash. With this shade, you need to designate the distribution of light in the picture - outline the shadows and penumbra.
Step 5
When the underpainting is dry, you can start the main color work. It is important to choose the right tools for each material. So, tempera paints are applied using thin kolinsky or synthetic brushes. For acrylic, brushes of any size and shape are suitable. If you are painting with paint thinned to a watercolor state, use a soft squirrel brush. Thick acrylic will be easier to spread with stiff bristles or synthetics. Hard brushes are also needed for the oil. However, synthetic ones will not work; it is better to choose pork bristles. In addition, palette knives can be useful in creating oil paintings.

The way you apply paints to the canvas depends on the style you choose, tools, paint. You can study the traditional technique or create your own - the main thing is that the result suits you.
