Lambrequin is called the upper part of the curtain trim, a frill that hides the sharp corners of the curtain and the rails of the cornice. It gives the curtains a finished and elegant look. It can be used not only as an addition to the main curtain, but also as a separate element of the interior.
Lambrequin is able to completely hide the cornice, and, conversely, to emphasize it. When creating a lambrequin, you can use many decorative elements - patterns, brushes, fringes.
It is quite difficult to find the right version of the lambrequin for the already finished interior and curtains, therefore, if you have time and desire, it is better to sew it yourself. Sewing a lambrequin is not as difficult as it might seem.
Before starting to cut the fabric, you need to decide on the size of the future curtain. For this, both paper models and simple measurements are suitable. To visually increase the height of the window, the length of the lambrequin needs to be slightly reduced, and vice versa.
After that, stripes are cut across the fabric, in width equal to the length of the future lambrequin plus about 20 cm. Not only the number of stripes, but also their size depends on the type of drapery tape. Do not forget that the alignment of individual strips of fabric with a small pattern, pattern or ornament will take much longer than when cutting plain fabrics. The strips are sewn on a sewing machine with an allowance of 1-2 cm. The strips for lining should be 7-8 cm narrower and 3-5 cm shorter than the strip of decorative fabric. You need to sew a lambrequin in the same way as any other curtain. After completion, a drapery tape is sewn to the upper edge, which will then collect the curtain into folds of the required size and shape.
Various options for decorating a lambrequin are interesting. For example, instead of braid, some craftswomen suggest using ribbon. In this case, its length should be equal to the width of the lambrequin plus a 3-4 cm seam allowance. The fringed braid looks beautiful and elegant. It is sewn to the seamy side of the lambrequin with two rows of stitches. The lower edges of the curtain can be scalloped. A festoon blank is obtained from a cut circle. At the same time, the lambrequin is hemmed so that folds remain in the corners of the scallops. If the curtain has a lining, scallops are cut into it at the same time as the main fabric.
The finished lambrequin is suspended from the cornice with hooks or other fasteners. Think in advance whether it will hide part of the cornice or, on the contrary, make it stand out.
