Step 1
Before casting the plaster figure, clean the mold and coat its surface with a lubricant - oil or petroleum jelly. It is better to use a liquid lubricant, it is easier to apply and at the same time it will allow you to better preserve the ornament and small details. Lightly sprinkle the clay mold with water to soften it - a surface that is too dry will quickly draw out water from the plaster and it will be more difficult to get the finished product after drying.
Step 2
Prepare gypsum mortar according to the recommendations on the package. Try to prepare enough mixture to fill the entire form without waste.
Step 3
Fill the form with about one third of the mortar. It is very important that the plaster of Paris fills all the indentations by shaking the mold, or lubricating important areas with a bristly brush. Try to get all the air bubbles up.
Step 4
To apply the solution evenly to the entire inner surface of the mold, tilt it in different directions. You can also blow on the plaster while shaking the structure.
Step 5
When the gypsum mix has set a little, roughen it up from the inside by scraping it with a steel tool (such as a fork or dovetail scraper).
Step 6
To give strength to the plaster figure, reinforce it with steel reinforcement or wet splinters, hemp, tow, and other materials at hand. Submerge them in the poured solution and quickly fill the mold with the remaining plaster (preferably thicker).
Step 7
Please note that the second layer of the mixture should be poured when the first layer has just begun to set, but has not yet hardened. The plaster dries very quickly, so you only have a few minutes for the entire operation.
Step 8
Smooth out the plaster and remove the excess with cycles or a flattener. Leave the mold to set for a while, then remove the finished product.
