Old, but quite functional furniture will be able to serve its owners for many years without spoiling the apartment with its anti-aesthetic appearance. To do this, you just have to breathe a second life into it. Do-it-yourself decoupage of old furniture is a simple and effective way to give an old wardrobe or coffee table a few more years of worthy service.
Materials for furniture blending
To decoupage old furniture, you will need items, some of which are often used in renovations. This is an emery cloth of two types - medium-grained and fine-grained, acrylic paint, primer, PVA glue, brushes, varnish, napkins with a pattern (for decoupage or three-layer table napkins).
Masters professionally engaged in decoupage advise using materials specially designed for this type of needlework (paints, varnishes, napkins). But it must be borne in mind that they are quite expensive and are sold only in specialized stores, which are not in every city. Therefore, you can replace them with simpler and more affordable materials. For decoupage old furniture, the best suited: acrylic paint for finishing walls and ceilings, building acrylic primer, parquet, floor varnish or yacht varnish. It is best to buy synthetic and flat brushes No. 2, No. 5, No. 12. Instead of a primer, you can use PVA glue diluted with water 1: 1.
Progress
First of all, free the surface of the furniture from the old coating (varnish, stain, etc.). To do this, first with a large, and then with a fine emery cloth, process the entire surface of the furniture. After that, it is worth wiping it with a damp cloth to remove the remnants of the resulting wood dust.
Cover the cleaned furniture with 1 layer of primer. After drying, apply acrylic paint with the addition of PVA glue. To find the right color, you can use a special color scheme (they are also sold in small jars in hardware stores).
While the paint dries, work on your decoupage napkins. If you are using regular table napkins, be sure to choose three-layer napkins. Carefully separate the top printed sheet from the rest and cut out the details as you like. Make a composition out of them. When the paint is completely dry, sand the painted surface with fine emery cloth to remove all the irregularities and roughness left after painting.
Dilute PVA glue 1: 1 and glue the parts of the napkin to the surface, making smooth movements from the middle of the part to the edges. Try to do everything carefully so that the napkin does not break. Let the work dry for an hour.
Then cover the product with 2-3 layers of varnish. Each subsequent layer should be applied only after the previous one has completely dried. On this, decoupage of old furniture with your own hands can be considered complete.
