Bass strings change their sound over time for various reasons: uneven stretching, dirt, loss of special coating, etc. If you do not want to regularly contact the experts about string tension on your instrument, you can try to do it yourself.

It is necessary

  • - Bas-guitar;
  • - a set of strings.

Instructions

Step 1

If the four tuning pegs (devices for tensioning and securing strings) on your bass are arranged in a row, use the following procedure: remove the old E string first, insert a new one from the back of the bridge and run it through the entire mechanism. When you reach the splitter, bend (about ten cm from the splitter) and cut. The bend is needed so that the winding does not slide off the string. Insert the end of the string into the hole, pull the string through it and wind it (taut) with a peg. Twist the peg counterclockwise. If the second turn is lower than the first, then the lateral tension will be better, in addition, a clear contact between the string and the nut will be ensured. Press down on the string, bending it slightly, near the bridge at the moment when there is about a semitone of fine tuning, in order to better fix it. Repeat the same steps for strings A, G, and D.

Step 2

By removing the old string, you can make your job easier if you cut the end of the string before pulling it through the bridge mechanism. Remember that if you cut the string short, the lateral tension will be poor. This can lead to hum.

Step 3

If your guitar has a two-by-two tuning pegs (in the form of a square), then first also remove the old E string. Then insert a new one from the back of the bridge and pass it through the entire mechanism at the end of the neck, and at a distance of five to seven cm after bend the spike and cut it so that the winding does not unwind. After inserting the tip of the string into the special hole, wind the string using the peg so that the new turns are lower than the previous ones. Repeat all the same steps for string A. Pull the D and G strings in a mirror-like fashion.
