In the digital age, the paper book has lost its practical meaning and gained a new one. Now beautifully designed, it serves as a gift rather than a source of information. With all the variety of store books made for such purposes, handmade books are still valued as souvenirs, especially if they were made by the donor himself.
It is necessary
- Velvet;
- Soft cardboard;
- Recording sheets;
- PVA glue;
- Awl;
- Waxed thread;
- A strip of leather.
Instructions
Step 1
Fold the sheets in the correct order. Make sure all pages are in place. The corners of the sheets must match each other. Be sure to add one sheet at the beginning and at the end of the block without notes and illustrations. For convenience, secure the sheet block in a suitable size frame with the last page down.
Step 2
Make several punctures with an awl in the right margin, 1 cm from the edge and 2 to 4 cm apart, depending on the size of the sheets. Thread the waxed thread through the punctures and tie the ends tight enough so that the sheets remain assembled without tearing. Glue the sheets along the same field from the edge to the level of the punctures. Be careful not to let the glue spill past this border or blind the pages. Set the block aside to dry.
Step 3
Cardboard is needed to give the book its shape. If you refuse even the soft frame, the cover will wrinkle, and the sheets will bend, tear and wear off. Cut two rectangles to fit the sheet or slightly larger (5 mm on each side). Cut out two rectangles of the same size from the velvet, but add more seam allowances (1 cm on each side). The second pair of velvet rectangles will have a narrow side 1 cm less (if the book is vertical). Fold the pieces in pairs (each pair has two rectangles of different sizes) facing inward. Sew on three sides, leaving a side equal to the height of the book. Turn the velvet bags inside out, work over the edges of the remaining side.
Step 4
Fold back one side of each piece of cardboard. Glue the outer pages of the block to the cardboard so that the folds line up with the stitching. Place a strip of leather in place of the spine, so that its edges coincide in width with the top and bottom of the book, and slightly extend over the length of the cardboard. Stick to the book. Apply glue to the edges of the cardboard.
Step 5
Put on the velvet pouches, aligning the edges with the last glued areas. Wait for it to dry.
