A Japanese landscape can be painted with ordinary watercolors, the main thing is to depict traditional Japanese symbols in the picture and use a large amount of water when painting, and use thicker paint for details.

Step 1
Use uncoated paper or natural-toned cardboard to create the scenery.
Step 2
Sketch in pencil on a piece of paper. Do not press on the pencil, the lines should be barely visible, as the drawing will be transparent and weightless. Do not paint the details, they can be depicted with thin brush strokes. Draw mountains in the background, pagodas, bodies of water, and traditional Japanese bridges. Outline the silhouettes of people in two or three lines, take into account the peculiarities of the posture of Japanese women and men. Sakura is one of the most recognizable symbols of Japan, so you can depict cherry trees flying around.
Step 3
Start coloring the drawing. Use watercolor to achieve the transparency typical of Japanese paintings. When applying paint, consider the peculiarities of paper and cardboard. The first allows you to create smudges and smooth transitions, and the second absorbs a large amount of water, so try to calculate the required amount of paint correctly.
Step 4
Use a wide brush to paint the main background, in particular, the sky, greenery, water surface. Start with the large areas at the top of the drawing and work your way down. Leave the drawing to dry completely.
Step 5
Draw small details with a thin brush - trunks and crowns of trees, snow on mountain tops, roofs of pagodas. Do not use overt bright colors, mix watercolors on the palette to get the shades you want. Do not try to draw every leaf or petal of the flower, just set the direction of the branches or buds with a few strokes.
Step 6
Draw Japanese characters in one of the corners of the picture, you can find suitable hokku on the Internet. Practice drawing the symbols on a separate sheet of paper with one stroke of the brush. For hieroglyphs, you can use clerical ink or watercolor, it is better to mix black with blue or brown to get a dusty shade.
Step 7
Use pastel crayons to create dense shadows on mountain slopes and water surfaces. There shouldn't be many of them.
