For a long time it was believed that oil painting was invented in the 15th century. In any case, it was then that it became widespread throughout Europe. However, art critics have found traces of the use of oil paints as early as the 12th century. During the Renaissance, artists themselves had to make paints, primers, varnishes, solvents and invent new painting techniques. Today, anyone can test themselves in this art form - paints and all the necessary materials are sold in art stores.

Step 1
Think over the plot of your future painting. Draw pencil or watercolor sketches to get a better idea of what exactly you want to get.
Step 2
You can try to create your first oil painting on primed cardboard or finished primed canvas. But for optimal results, it is best to learn how to pull the canvas onto a stretcher yourself and then prime it.
Step 3
Squeeze the oil paints onto the palette, leave a place where you will mix them. Do not squeeze out the tube completely, the paint dries quickly, so it is better to add them as needed. It is most convenient to mix paints with a small spatula - a palette knife (it will also come in handy when you clean the palette of dried mass after work).
Step 4
Clean your brushes every time you change colors. First, they must be wiped with a cloth and then rinsed in a solvent. After finishing work, be sure to rinse not only the brushes, but also the palette.
Step 5
After finishing work on the painting, it must be varnished. This will fix the paint layer and also smooth the surface. In addition, the varnish protects the painting from environmental influences, prevents the paint from cracking and darkening.
