Electric guitars with tremolo appeared in the middle of the last century. They immediately became very popular, as the mechanism, also called "typewriter" or "vibrato", gave performers a lot of interesting possibilities. These guitars can be found on sale today. It is often necessary to block the tremolo. For example, if the machine is loose or if you are not going to use it for some time.

Step 1
Become familiar with how the tremolo works. It consists in the fact that with the help of a lever the springs of the bridge move through which the guitar strings pass. Thanks to these springs, the bridge moves up and down, which allows the musician to pull and release the strings. This creates a tremolo or vibrato effect.
Step 2
Some brands of tremolo (eg Jazzmaster) have a trem-loc function. By using this function, you can maintain the tuning even if your string is broken. Before using this function of the clipper, you need to accurately tune the guitar and adjust the tremolo. Then, in case of unforeseen circumstances, you can simply move a special slider, which also prohibits the machine. Trem-loc will hold the spring and prevent the system from getting out of balance.
Step 3
A very convenient way to block tremolo is with the Tremol-No. Install it in place of one of the springs. The advantage of this method is in three modes. You can completely block the bridge, you can make a downgrade lock or set the normal mode, as if there was no device at all.
Step 4
If for some reason you cannot use the first two methods, you can use home remedies. First, try tightening the screws that hold the springs. The power reserve is usually quite decent. Twist them one at a time, about a quarter of a turn, and very carefully. Remember to control the position of the bridge. Precision is also required so that the strings do not break. You can replace the springs with stiffer ones.
Step 5
Measure the distance between the deck and the tremolo. This is best done with a vernier caliper, although another more or less accurate measuring instrument can of course be used. The designs of the guitar and the typewriter can be different, the gap between them also depends on it.
Step 6
Cut out a small rectangular block. The length and width may vary, and the thickness is approximately 1 mm longer than the distance between the clipper and the deck. With this method, the tremolo is blocked in one direction, but reliably. Sand the block thoroughly. Make sure all the corners of your homemade bollard are straight. One side of it should be as perpendicular to the deck as possible.
Step 7
Insert a block between the clipper and the deck. Remove excess springs, leaving one. The machine in this state will keep quite firmly. To reach the block, it will be necessary to pull back the bed strongly.
