DIY snowflakes are perhaps the easiest and most affordable way to decorate an apartment, kindergarten, school and workplace for the New Year. You can make one of the main New Year's decorations from almost any available materials: printer paper, paper napkins, foil, old magazines, book sheets and even pasta.
Openwork paper snowflakes: ready-made schemes and templates
To make a beautiful snowflake out of paper, you should stock up on ready-made templates in advance to create a pattern. Of course, you can cut paper without using special schemes, but this method is suitable only for those who already have a certain experience and artistic taste. The process of making openwork snowflakes is quite simple; for this, a sheet of paper must be folded in half so that a triangle is formed. We fold the resulting triangle two more times, after which we cut out the pattern using a previously prepared template. This scheme is applicable for creating traditional hexagonal snowflakes.
To make a snowflake with eight corners, first fold a sheet of paper in half with a triangle, and then one more time obliquely. Octagonal snowflakes look more elegant, but they are harder to cut due to the more layers of paper.
Schemes for cutting paper snowflakes
Instead of plain white paper, you can use napkins, thin papyrus paper, foil, or old magazines. Beautiful openwork snowflakes on the walls and windows of the room will perfectly complement the festive decor. From light paper snowflakes, you can make a great garland or stretch with threads hanging down. You can also decorate a New Year's card or gift wrap with a homemade snowflake. Snowflakes made of a denser material will be the perfect decoration for a children's New Year's costume.
Volumetric paper snowflake
Necessary materials:
- thick paper of any color;
- pencil;
- ruler;
- scissors;
- stapler (glue or tape).
Manufacturing:
- Cut out six identical squares from white or colored paper (the length of each side is 10 centimeters). If you plan to make a large Christmas decoration, then the sides of the squares should be 25 cm. Moreover, the larger the size of the snowflake, the thicker paper should be used in its manufacture, otherwise the product will quickly deform and lose its original appearance.

We fold each square in half with a triangle. Draw three parallel lines with a ruler at the same distance from each other. If you are making a large snowflake, then it is better to draw more stripes.
image - We make cuts along the lines marked with a pencil with scissors. We unfold the paper back into a square.
- We fold the first row of strips into a tube, fastening the edges with a stapler, tape or glue.

We turn the square over to the other side and again roll up the next two strips with a tube, not forgetting to fix the result obtained.

When all the components for the snowflake are ready, they must be stapled with a stapler. First we connect three petals, then three more. We fasten the received shamrocks together. You also need to fix all the places where the elements of the snowflake are in contact with each other so that the snowflake keeps its shape well.

If you wish, you can do without decor altogether if the snowflake is made of shiny paper. The resulting decoration can be hung on a tree or wall. If you make a lot of volumetric snowflakes out of paper, then you can make a wonderful garland or stretch.
Beautiful pasta snowflake
Necessary materials:
- pasta of various shapes;
- brushes of different sizes;
- glue Moment;
- acrylic paints;
- decorative elements (beads, rhinestones, sequins, artificial snow, stickers, etc.).

We spread an oilcloth on the table so as not to stain the table with glue. For convenience, lay out the pasta on a large flat dish. When all the preparations are made, you can start creating a pattern for the future snowflake. Do not make the snowflake too large, as it will turn out to be very fragile.

When the shape of the snowflake is invented, you can start gluing the elements. It is better to do this with Moment glue. First, we glue the inner parts of the snowflake, then let the structure dry and get stronger. Next, by analogy, glue the second and third circles.

When the snowflake is ready, you can paint it with white acrylic paint. It is better to use brushes of different sizes in order to be able to paint over all hard-to-reach places and crevices. Apply a second coat of paint if necessary.

After the paint has completely dried, we decorate the finished pasta product with artificial snow (it can be replaced with ordinary sugar or salt), sparkles or rhinestones. This snowflake will be a great option for a Christmas tree decoration.

Openwork snowflake using quilling technique
Quilling (paper-rolling) is a direction in art associated with the manufacture of flat or volumetric figures from strips of paper twisted into spirals. Using the quilling technique, you can create incredibly beautiful openwork snowflakes.
Necessary materials:
- paper;
- ruler;
- pencil;
- scissors;
- brush;
- glue;
- awl.
Manufacturing:

On paper, we make marks of 0.5 cm across the entire width of the sheet. We apply a ruler to the marked points and draw lines with a pencil. Then we cut out the strips with scissors.

To create rolls, a special quilling tool is usually used, but if you do not have one, then an ordinary awl will do the job. We take a paper strip and tightly wrap an awl around it. Let the roll loosen a little, after which we fix the shape by gluing the edge to the base.

At the base of the snowflake there will be one round and six drop-shaped parts. To make a roll in the form of a drop, lightly press on one edge with your fingers.

To the resulting composition, add six elements in the form of an eye. To make them, you need to flatten the round roll with your fingers on both edges. Glue the oval rolls between the drop-shaped rolls.

Later in the composition, smaller round rolls will be used. We take a strip, fold it in half and cut it. Twist a round roll from a short strip. We are preparing six more such elements.

We form six large rolls of a round shape and glue them to the drop-shaped parts.

Next, we need six rolls in the form of a square. To do this, take a standard round roll and give it a square shape with your fingers.

We twist one standard roll with a large hole and glue it to the top of the product. When the paper snowflake is dry, you can hang it on the Christmas tree or on the wall.

Vintage snowflake from book sheets
A snowflake made from old yellowed book sheets will become an original decor element for the New Year.
Necessary materials:
- unnecessary old book;
- fishing line;
- transparent glue;
- pencil;
- ruler;
- sparkles of golden color.

We draw unnecessary book sheets on a line 2 cm wide.

For one ray of the snowflake, you need to prepare seven strips: one is the full length of the page, the next two are 2 cm shorter than the first, two more strips are 2 cm shorter than the previous two. We make the last two strips by analogy, having subtracted 2 cm in length.

From the longest strip we form a loop by gluing the edges at the base. To the resulting loop we apply two more, made from smaller strips. We glue three loops together at the base.

We do the same with the rest of the strips. We place the resulting structure under a heavy press so that all the elements are well fixed.

When the glue dries, the base of the workpiece should be additionally tied with fishing line to give the structure more strength. By analogy, we make eight more such beams.

We again draw the book sheets into strips of the same size, cut out and fold them into one tight ring. We fix the result obtained with the help of a fishing line. Also, for reliability, you should coat the ring with transparent glue.

When all the blanks are dry, you can start joining the decoration parts. To do this, grease the base of each workpiece with glue and attach it to the ring. We also glue together all the extreme loops.

The last step is to decorate the finished snowflake in a vintage style. We take transparent glue and apply it along the edges of the composition, after which we sprinkle abundantly with golden sparkles. The finished Christmas decoration can be hung on the wall or used as a Christmas tree decoration.
