An external flash allows for more natural shots in which shadows appear to the side of the subject rather than behind it. However, an illiterate connection of an external flash threatens to damage the device, or even electrical shock.
Instructions
Step 1
All external flash units designed to be electrically connected to the camera fall into two categories: high and low voltage at the sync terminal. The first of them can be used only in conjunction with cameras that have a mechanical sync contact, the second - with any devices. Never neglect this rule, otherwise an expensive camera will fail. If it becomes necessary to connect a flash of the first type to a device with an electronic sync contact, you will have to buy or make a special matching device located between the device and the flash.
Step 2
Take special care when using direct-powered flash units. The starting circuit in such an illuminator must necessarily be separated from the circuits under mains voltage by megohm resistors on both sides (and not just on one side).
Step 3
Some flashes are put on directly on the connector located on the device (they are called cableless), while others are connected with a cable. Remember that cableless flashes only increase the light, but do not eliminate the main problem - the location of the shadows behind the subject. If desired, the cordless flash can be converted into a regular flash by adding a cable to it. It should be well insulated.
Step 4
Flash units equipped with a light sensor are very convenient. They turn on simultaneously with the firing of a small flash located directly in the camera. They are connected with the device itself only optically, and therefore do not threaten it with damage even in the event of a malfunction. If you wish, you can turn it into such a flash and a regular one by adding a home-made or ready-made device to it - a light synchronizer.
Step 5
Position the optional flash to the side of the camera for a natural looking shadow. With the help of several light synchronizers, you can make several flashes work simultaneously with the device, thereby obtaining an even more interesting artistic effect.
