Once upon a time, such photographs were commonplace, since there were glass photographic plates that served both to obtain a negative and to create a positive image. Now they are not on sale. But the combination of old printing methods with modern technical means also makes it possible to get a photo on glass.

It is necessary

  • - a sheet of translucent tracing paper of a suitable size;
  • - a computer;
  • - laser printer;
  • - powerful lighting lamp 500-1000W;
  • - dikstrin (potato starch);
  • - sugar;
  • - glycerin;
  • - potassium dichromate;
  • - finely ground mineral paint or toner;
  • - gauze;
  • - 2 soft brushes;
  • - pharmaceutical or laboratory scales with weights;
  • - chemical vessels;
  • - an old turntable for vinyl records;
  • - 10% alkali solution;
  • - cotton wool;
  • - organic solvent;
  • - darkened room.

Instructions

Step 1

On a computer, process the photo so that it is black and white, with a resolution of at least 300 dpi and the required size. Consider the capabilities of the printer. There is no need to translate the image into a negative, since this type of emulsion assumes a "positive - positive" print. You can process the picture in Photoshop or another suitable graphics editor. If it is necessary to view the photograph from the side of the emulsion, you can make the picture mirror-like. Print the negative on a printer on tracing paper.

Step 2

Prepare a glass sheet of the correct size. Degrease it thoroughly with 10% alkali solution and wipe with organic solvent. Wipe the glass with cotton wool dipped in glycerin and wipe dry.

Step 3

Make photosensitive copying solution. Dissolve 3 g of potassium dichromate in 20 ml of water. Dissolve 20 g of potato starch separately in 80 ml of water. Add 6 g sugar, 0.5 ml glycerin. Stir well. Drain both solutions together and cover the prepared side of the glass plate with the mixture. Dry it at 30-35 ° C on a fast-spinning turntable or pottery wheel. This is necessary so that the emulsion is evenly distributed. From the moment of combining the solutions and before the start of exposure, carry out all work under weak artificial light. …

Step 4

Overlay the printed image on the emulsion layer of the glass plate. The drawing on the tracing paper should be in contact with the emulsion. This must be done quickly enough so that the glass does not have time to cool down. Negative paper should not be glued, pressed, or rolled onto glass.

Step 5

Conduct exposure with a strong illuminating lamp. It can last from 3 to 15 minutes. After that, turn off the lamp and carefully remove the tracing paper. Leave the plate to cool in a dark place. Wait for it to cool down to room temperature.

Step 6

Using a soft brush, apply toner or fine mineral powder all over the emulsion. After capturing the image, use a clean brush to remove excess toner. The resulting image can be coated with a second glass, a clear varnish that does not dissolve the emulsion and toner.
