Shilo is indispensable not only in sewing work: it is used in the manufacture of shoes, in carpentry, joinery, as a stationery, etc. However, the most widely used awl is used in sewing work with dense or multi-layer materials.

Externally, the awl is a fairly thick, strong needle with a handle for ease of use. Unlike an ordinary sewing needle, the awl does not have an eyelet for threading.

You can sew with an awl in different ways. Some craftsmen first pierce a hole in the fabric and then thread a regular sewing needle through it. That is, it would be more correct to say that they use the awl as an auxiliary, not a sewing tool.

The second method is more complicated, requiring a certain skill: the master makes a hole in the material, and then pushes the thread into it with the tip of the awl. Without the skill of such work, you can easily damage the thread, simply break it, it is for this that this method of sewing with an awl is not widely used, and one way or another, most people prefer to only pierce holes with an awl, threading the thread into it with other tools, for example, a needle or crochet.
