Glass mosaic has many advantages, since glass is wear-resistant, waterproof, heat-resistant and at the same time frost-resistant. Due to this, the field of application of glass mosaic is very extensive: it can be used to decorate a bathroom, a fireplace, and decorative objects that are not protected from external influences of the weather. In addition, colored glass is an incredibly beautiful material that refracts light and creates a rich sparkling effect. Glass also goes well with other materials: ceramics, metal, stone.
It is necessary
- - base for mosaics made of glass or plexiglass;
- - colored glass for mosaic elements;
- - glass cutter, wire cutters, glass breaking pliers, syringe;
- - transparent liquid silicone;
- - tile grout.
Instructions
Step 1
Find a motif that you will lay out from the glass mosaic, or draw the desired pattern yourself. In this case, take into account the specifics of the mosaic pattern - it consists of a large number of pieces with clear contours. Quite good options for such images can be found in ordinary children's coloring pages, or in a special clipart.
Step 2
Copy the selected motif onto the glass base of the future mosaic. To do this, use special markers for glass, which, if necessary, can be easily washed off with water.
Step 3
Transfer also the details of the drawing corresponding to each color to pieces of colored glass. In this case, you can "break" large planes of the same color in the drawing into several separate parts, each of which must be transferred to the glass of the given color. These can be chaotic pieces of random size, or lining up in a certain order (fish scales, butterfly wing structure, identical diamonds, or other elements).
Step 4
Carefully cut out all the details of the design from the glass using a glass cutter. Observe precautions when working with glass
Step 5
Place the pattern of the prepared mosaic pieces on the glass base. Then, using a syringe (without a needle), apply a small amount of liquid silicone to each part and glue it to the base. Be sure to leave small gaps (a couple of millimeters) between the pieces of the mosaic, which will then be filled with grout. As a result, the original contours of your drawing will expand slightly, therefore, when choosing a drawing and a basis for it, you need to take this into account.
Step 6
After the silicone is completely dry (it is better to leave it overnight), you need to wipe the seams between the pieces of the mosaic. Dilute the grout using the method described in the attached instructions to a thick sour cream consistency. Apply the grout in a continuous layer to the mosaic so that all the joints are filled with it. You can use a colored grout that matches the color of the picture, or a contrasting one.
Step 7
Carefully remove excess slightly dried grout from the surface of the product with water and a regular sponge. Let the mosaic dry completely.
