Buttonholes can be made in different shapes and sizes. But in order to learn how to knit such loops, you must first understand the basics - learn the algorithm for making traditional vertical buttonholes.

Instructions
Step 1
First, decide how many buttonholes are needed, and where exactly they will be located on the clothes. Make sure that all loops are tied at an equal distance from one another.
Step 2
First, knit the right side of the plank on the front side of the future product. Slip the stitches that you have already knitted onto a pin. Button it up. The loops that remain, knit further. They must be two rows higher than the remaining hole. From the side of the hole, knit edge loops. And after the last row is knitted, the thread should be on the side where the buttonhole is formed.
Step 3
Next, remove the loops that were previously dropped on a pin on an additional knitting needle. From the side of the hole, knit further using an additional ball of thread. Knit as many rows as the height of the loop. After that, cut a new thread, be sure to leave a free cut, equal to at least five centimeters.
Step 4
In order for the parts of the plank to connect, knit the loops previously dropped on the additional knitting needle with the main thread. If you continue to knit further, then on the seamy side, carefully tie the end of the additional thread that you previously cut.
Step 5
In the event that you will be sewing very large buttons to a knitted garment, sew the edges of the loop with the free end of an additional thread. Make sure you leave a longer end (it should be equal to 10 centimeters or slightly more). With this additional finish, the hinges will be more durable.
Step 6
If the buttonhole is too large and too loose for the button to be sewn, sew it neatly from one or both ends. To do this, be sure to take a thread of the same color. You can also reduce the loop by beautifully trimming it with a special loop seam.
