Most listeners associate bagpipes with Scotland. However, this instrument was once used throughout Europe, from Scandinavia to Portugal. Now, due to the fact that folk music has again become in demand, this wonderful instrument is experiencing a rebirth. This historic bagpipe bag is made of leather. However, modern materials are no worse, and in some ways even superior to traditional ones.

It is necessary

  • - synthetic leatherette;
  • - bicycle tube or a piece of calendered nylon;
  • - cow horn;
  • - 4 branches from fruit trees with a diameter of 1.5 to 3 cm;
  • - a piece of thick fabric;
  • - fringe;
  • - glue "Moment", 88 or BF.
  • - sandpaper;
  • - acetone;
  • - thread No. 10;
  • - hacksaw;
  • - linseed oil;
  • - tuning fork.

Instructions

Step 1

Start making bagpipes by choosing the material. Synthetic leatherette is available at hardware stores. But you need to try to stretch it. The bag has to withstand a lot of stress, so choose a more durable material. It should not break when pulled.

Step 2

Zoom in and cut out the pattern. Fold the leatherette in half, right sides to each other, and circle the template. The narrowest part is for the tube drain. Its size does not really matter for the sound quality, it depends solely on which look of the bagpipes suits you best.

Step 3

Cut out the templates and fold them right-side up, aligning all the cuts. You need to spread glue on the allowances on the front side. Sand the glossy surface of the edges of the workpiece, degrease them with acetone. Apply glue to the allowances about 1.5 cm from the edges. There is no need to glue the hole for the drain. Press firmly on the seams and place them under the press until they dry completely. Carefully read the instructions for the glue - it indicates how much you need to keep the parts under the load.

Step 4

Fold cotton threads No. 10 3-4 times. Sew the seams with any seam you know. It is best to use a double stitch, such as a boot stitch, or "back needle". The thread can be waxed.

Step 5

Cut out a tape that is 5 cm wide and the same length as the perimeter of the bag. Align the fabric sides with the fabric sides, fold the tape in half and glue it around the entire seam. This will strengthen the seam and give the bag the necessary tightness.

Step 6

Saw off all unnecessary from the cow's horn. Only the horn should remain, without the cranial bone. Pour water into a large saucepan, put the horn and some aromatic substances in it, bring to a boil and cook for at least 4 hours. Take out the horn and use a knife to cut out the inner part, leaving only the outer shell.

Step 7

Leave the horn to dry in a warm place for 3-5 weeks. It is best to do this in the summer, in the shade. After the horn is completely ossified, reamer the sharp part to fit the playing tube.

Step 8

Pick up a round stick that is about 25 cm long. It should be dry and intact. Grind it, sand it and burn out the core. This can be done with a red-hot iron rod. Its inner diameter is 8 mm. Mark the holes. Strictly observe the dimensions. Saturate the wood with oil. This will prevent rotting. Soak the parts in a container of linseed oil for about a week. Using the same technology, make another 2-3 different tubes.

Step 9

Make a brass or ebony cane. A wind reed is a small plate that is inserted into the top hole. Nowadays, bagpipe canes can be found in music stores. Collect the bagpipes. Make holes for the drains. They should be in the form of petals. Insert the bourdon and blower tubes into them and tighten them firmly with threads.

Step 10

Grind out the wood pieces. Don't forget the valves. Make the upper part from the dropper tube. Cut a valve out of a bicycle tube or calendered nylon. From a plastic tube (also from a dropper), make a bourdon peep.

Step 11

Make a shirt for the bag. Cut it out using seam allowances patterns. Stitch, cut tube cutouts. Start sewing from the top and close the bottom after inserting the bag and tubing. Decorate the bagpipes with fringes.
