Hippos are large, massive animals that live on the African continent. Despite their harsh nature, they are often used as characters in animation. Even a novice artist can depict a hippopotamus, since the drawing of this animal is based on simple geometric shapes.

Instructions
Step 1
Draw a large ellipse in the center of the sheet. On the right side, draw a small oval to represent the character's head. Continuing to work on the frame, sketch out the outlines of the hippopotamus's limbs in the form of four rectangles. To depict an animal with an open mouth, add two horizontally elongated ellipses to the head oval. The left edge of each ellipse should start at the center of the head oval, and the right sides of the ellipses end outside of it.
Step 2
Start drawing the head of the hippopotamus. It merges smoothly into a short thick neck. At the moment, the drawing does not require detailing, so pay attention only to the main contours of the character. Next, mark the jaws. In place of the upper small ellipse, draw a shape that resembles ski goggles. Its outline should be smooth. On the top line of the shape, draw two small bumps. These are the nostrils of the hippopotamus. The lower jaw can be drawn as a semicircle with a double lower line.
Step 3
Next, move on to sketching the body of the hippopotamus. Focusing on the outline of the large ellipse, draw an elongated body. Make a small depression on the top line. It should be between the head and the middle of the character's body.
Step 4
Draw two small ears on the hippo's head. The left ear is not fully visible. Therefore, it can be depicted as a triangle with arched sides. Draw the right eye in line with the ears and nostrils of the hippopotamus. The eyes of the animal stand out quite strongly above the surface of the muzzle. Thanks to this, the eyes remain on the surface, while the hippopotamus's head is submerged in the water. To depict this feature, surround the near eye with additional lines. The left eye is not visible. It can be identified by a small tubercle on the right side of the left ear.
Step 5
The limbs of the hippopotamus are wide and disproportionately short in comparison with the overall massiveness of the body. Each of them has four fingers. They are slightly apart from each other. When drawing the limbs, add folds to represent the joints.
Step 6
Detail the mouth of the animal. Draw two large, sharp fangs. In addition to them, draw some more teeth. Draw the mouth of the hippopotamus with two vertical lines.
Step 7
Color the hippo. The skin of the animal can be dyed gray with a barely noticeable brown tint. Highlight the prominent parts of the character a little. This will add dimension to the image. Use a dirty pink shade to shade the ears, skin around the eyes and the lower torso of the hippopotamus. Paint the animal's mouth with a terracotta shade.
